What We Learned from the ADCC Arizona Open

I'm back to covering the ADCC Opens after taking a bit of a break. We are back in the U.S. and there were some good names here. This event was filled with action and finishes and was worth watching. Watching every match might be a bit too much, but for this event most of the matches were good, so picking some at random is worth your time. Let's get into it.

How People Won

Anytime I see more submissions than points wins, I'm happy. There were a lot of finishes here and surprisingly there were more leg finishes than chokes. As you can see 26.2% of finishes came from leglocks, while only 22.7% came from chokes. Armlocks weren't particularly common with only 5.2% of finishes came from them. I should mention that there were some finishes I couldn't record because they either didn't have videos or the finish happened off screen. This skewed the stats slightly, but they should still give you a fairly accurate view of what happened.

Stats

The most common submission was the RNC, which is expected. Coming in 2nd was the inside heelhook, and the outside version came in 3rd. One thing that was a bit surprising is that there were so many different leg locks. There were quite a few kneebars and ankle locks as well as 2 estima locks and a Z-lock. The armbar and the arm triangle were also popular submissions. There was a lot of variety here in the submissions used and it is always nice to see some of the more rare submissions. It even seems like the darce is making a comeback.

Overall

This was a good event and I'm happy that some names came out to compete. The action was even better than I expected, so check it out if you haven't. The athletes really went for the kill in these matches and you can see a variety of different games and approaches. I was happy to see so many different finishes and overall I think these ADCC Opens have been a success. The only thing I can complain about is the camera work, or lack there of. It seems a lot of people are using these Opens as warmups for the ADCC trails coming soon. People like Big Dan(Manasoiu), Oliver Taza, the Corbre brothers, etc have been a multiple opens trying to up their game. I'm hoping other big names jump onboard too.  For those that a looking for year to date submission stats, don't worry. I'll be adding those to the next post this week after the next WNO event.
