What We Learned from the 2nd ADCC South American Trials

The final South American Trials have finished and now we have 8 more people going to the ADCC championship. This one was a bit more action packed than the last one, especially the ladies. This was a pretty good event and it event had some big names. Let's take a look at who is headed to ADCC.

How People Won

This was pretty good with 43.3% of the matches ending is finishes. Most were chokes, but there are also a lot of arm submissions, which is rare. However 8 matches ending in decisions isn't good. There were far too many matches that consisted of people slapping each others necks and holding hands. I wish they were a little more strict with the penalties for that, but The other matches were great, so I think we can overlook those.

It should be noted that these stats only cover the semi-finals, finals and 3rd place matches.

Stats

The armbar came out on top here, which is a bit strange. Usually the RNC is ahead by quite a bit, but here the armbar out numbered it in successes, attempts and even completion percentage. The next sub was the guillotine and following that is a number of other subs. It is always interesting to see different subs, but it seem South America loves the armbar(or at least for this event).

The double leg takedown came on top here followed by the single leg. It seems people were struggling a biit with the single leg as it was attempted 33 times, but was only completed 6 times. There were some other fun throws mixed in, especially the uranage/suplex.

The sub sweep and the 50/50 sweep tied for first here. I was a bit surprised about the 50/50 sweep as those aren't as common these days, but if I remember correctly they both happened in the same match. One person swept and then after a while the other person swept back.  Overall it seems like there weren't many sweeps even attempted at this event.

The halfguard pass came out on top here with 9 passes. It seemed to be a very successful way of getting past the guard and scoring. It should be noted however that at least 2 of these were examples of people putting themselves back into half guard in order to score during the points period. Even so the half guard pass was the main weapon for the top player during these trials.

The mount actually had more finishes than the back which is very surprising. In fact these are the only 2 positions that were able to garner submissions.

Action

The action score here was 5.96 and the technique score was 1.54, which you can compare to the average for last year was was 6.5 per 5min and 1.68 techniques per 5 min. This is below the average and I think it does reflect the matches I watched. There was a large deviation in the matches, with some being amazing action packed bouts and others having little to no action. A few of the matches really dragged this event down, but I still think overall this event was pretty decent.

Overall

This was a good event and I was happy to see more people added to ADCC. I was really happy to see Ana Carolina Viera, Fabricio Andre and Pedro Marinho return to ADCC. We got some good matches and some really exciting finishes. There are only 2 trials left, the 2nd North American trials and the 2nd Asian Oceania trials. I'm looking forward to them and make sure to follow along with me.
