What We Learned from Fight Pass Invitational 8

There has been a drought of pro grappling events recently, but it looks like things are starting to pick up again. This time we got a great card with FPI 8. We got some big names and good match ups. However just looking good on paper isn't always enough. Let's see if it lived up its potential.

How People Won

Here we got a 55.5% finish rate, which is frankly amazing. Usually things hover around 30%, but here more than half of the matches ended in subs. Chokes made up the majority of the finishes, but there was a spectacular leg lock as well. Usually the prelim matches have mismatches that allow for subs in the begging of the event, but the main event is much less eventful. Here we got the exact opposite. This event gradually gets better and better and we start seeing more subs as we get deeper into it. I was worried that this event might be a dud after the long break without pro grappling, but this was a really great event.

Stats

The RNC came out on top here as always. However we also got a spectacular inside heelhook(I wish FP put a clip of it on instagram. It was the sub of the night) as well as a guillotine and an anaconda choke. Surprisingly there weren't many inside heelhook attempts, but out of the 3 we did get 1 got a finish. The stats here don't really do things justice as many of the failures were actually fairly close and I'm surprised people managed to escape some of them. I was hoping Gabriel Almeida would hit that twister, but I guess it wasn't in the cards.

Overall we had a 10% finish rate for subs during this event.

Here the single leg was kind followed by the double leg takedown. I was a bit suprised to see the ogoshi/uki goshi being used, but I guess it shows that people are working their standup more and adding new things to their arsenal. There were 2 kani basami attempts as well, which I was suprised about, but luckily nobody was injured by them. Although I worry about injuries from that takedown, when someone hits it, it is quite spectacular.

Overall we had a 45% finish rate for takedowns during this event.

The half guard pass was number 1 here, but the bodylock, smashpass, longstep and crabride also scored. Although the halfguard pass came out on top, it was actually one of the lowest percentage passes. People seemed to have trouble extracting their legs, although they eventually got it.

Overall we had a 17% finish rate for passes during this event.

The armdrag was the number 1 sweep here, but we also saw x-guard, hook and roll over sweeps. We also saw one wrestle up to a double leg. We got a good amount of variety with the sweeps here and it showed a lot of different approaches can work.

Overall we had a 27% finish rate for sweeps during this event.

We had 2 finishes from the back and 1 from 50/50. There were a lot of times people got to side control and the mount, but they weren't able to finish.

Action

We got a 17.16 watchability score. This is actually the highest action score I've recorded so far. To be fair it has only been 4 events, but this is the highest out of the 3. This event had a lot of action and tons of finishes and this is reflected in the watchability score.

We also had an action score of 11.41 which I also think is the highest I recorded. I think the stalling penalties definitely helped, but they were a bit inconsistent. The athletes definitely did their part to keep things interesting.

Overall

This wasa great event and it was nice after having that period after CJI/ADCC where we only had one big event(Polaris). FPI is putting money into things and luckily they are experimenting with the rules and although things aren't perfect they are, the event was great. The action was good and everything looked nice production wise.

They mentioned the pit afterwards and I'm not going to lie, it would have been better in the pit. They lowered the stage, which is a big improvement, but there were still to many restarts. This was especially true in the main event. I hope they can work someone out with karate combat and make it a reality. I like FPI's commitment to stalling calls and I hope they continue in this direction, but I think they need to make the criteria a bit more transparent and make sure it is called consistently.

The event was great and I hope we see another one before the end of the year. I also hope they do a better job at promoting them as events this good really need to be talked about more. I'll be doing a breakdown of pit submission series soon and I'll include the year to date stats there, so check back soon.
