What We Learned from Pit Submission Series 8

Pit Submission Series 8 just finished and I have the results and stats here. I've missed a few PSS events, but I'm back now and looking forward to seeing more. They got a pretty good lineup this time and even a grudge match. I was also happy to see an event use Daniel Sathler. He's young and exciting, so I also look forward to his matches, even if he isn't a big name. Anyway, let's get into the results.

 Results

Daniel Sathler def Matheus Costa via Flying Armbar

Paulo Miyao def Pablo Montovani via dec

AJ Agazarm def Piter Frank via dec

Vagner Rocha def Calon Sabino via Rear Triangle

How People Won

Half of the matches ended in subs, which is always good. We didn't get any leg subs this time, but I think that was somewhat expected considering none of the people on this card are known for their leg locks. The 2 subs we got were great though.

Stats

We got a rear triangle from Vagner Rocha and a spectacular triangle armbar from Daniel Sathler. To be honest that might be one of the greatest submissions I've ever seen. It showed how the pit can not only keep the action moving, but also can be used for some never seen before techniques.

This event had a 6% submission rate.

There were a lot of double legs, but I think this was mostly due to the pit. It made takedowns easier to hit and it was harder to people to walk backwards to escape. We got some mat returns as well, but overall we just got a lot of takedowns. The takedown percentage was surprisingly high.

This event had a 56% takedown rate.

The berimbolo was the only sweep here. Both were done by Paulo Miyao as you'd expect. I was a bit surprised that there were so few sweeps even attempted, but sometimes that happens.

This event had a 50% sweep rate.

There were a few different passes seen at this event. We got a halfguard pass, a toreando, a smash pass a double under pass and a high step pass. I always like to see people mix it up and show some different stuff, just to give the matches some variety.

This event had a 25% pass rate.

The only position that got a finish was the back, but the mount and side control were achieved quite a few times. There were a few leg entanglements, but none of the people on the card are big leg lockers, so I'm not surprised that there were no finishes from there.

This event had an amazing watchability score. 2 of the matches were pretty good. Another one was a grudge match that ended in a 1 sided beating, while the other was a quick highlight reel sub. I believe 21.13 is the new record for watchability and it might be hard to top that.

We got a 11.85 action score as well. I believe this is the highest action score too, but it just barely beat the last Fightpass invitational.

Overall

This was a great week for grappling. Between this event and FPI 8 we got some highlight reel finishes that will be seen in highlights for years to come. 2 of the matches were a bit slower, but none of them were really bad. I'm happy to see PSS continuing and I think they've proved that the pit is the best place to do submission grappling events.
