ADCC 2022 Play-by-Play

I decided to do a play by play for all the people that can't watch it. Unfortunately I won't be able to cover every match, but hopefully I'll get all the good stuff. I'll try to keep updating it as the event goes on, so be sure to refresh your browser.

Event Start

Things are starting a bit late. The production looks pretty good so far and the bottom rows of the arena are pretty full already.

The lights are diming and it looks like things are about to get started. Pyro shows and videos being shown of a samurai with clips of ADCC mixed in.

The Pride lady is announcing the names and she's bringing back those old Pride vibes. The production does seem to be improved compared to last time and it seems like a real show.

I like the jumpsuits they gave them. The got the countries right there, unlike the bracket graphics.

I really like the intros, but I don't think it was to show those videos in between. Its taking a while and IMO it would be better to go faster, so we can get to the matches.

They should have done these intros at the bracket reveals. I loved pride and the idea is good, but this is just taking too long. They seem to be trying to speed it up, but there are just too many people to do this.

People were not happy when they heard about the 15min warm up after all the time.

Tye looks fired up and Filipe looks relaxed. They're handfighting, but Filipe look much bigger. Filipe is trying to slowly walk him down, but Tye picks up a single leg. He can't finish it and they go back to handfighting. They both get told to pick up the pace, but I feel Tye is being fairly aggressive considering the size diference. Tye goes for a double leg and gets super deep, but Pena is too big and shoves him down. Pena is on top and Tye moves to 50/50. Pena tries to take the back, but Tye sees it coming and comes on top. Meregali hits a big uchimata, but after a few sec Tye gets back to his feet. They are both starting to look tired and I think their previous matches have worn them down. Meregali goes for a single leg and Tye reverses with and uchimata and then hits a drace. Mereagali is turing red, but he escapes at the last second. Then Tye goes for a buggy choke and Meregali pulls his head out. Meregali heavy on top as Tye  tries to defend from half guard.

Tye tries to wrestle up, but he can't take down Meregali. He does get to his feet however and they resume wrestling as the points period starts. Meregali going for some single legs, but they aren't close. Tye gets to a sinlge, but can't finish. Meregalu gets a bodylock and then moves to a rear waistlost. Meregali wrestles him down and tries to take his back, but Tye slips away and stands up.

Tye looks like he's going for a kneebar and there are not points yet for the takedown. 10 seconds left and Tye tries to extend the kneebar, but runs out of time. They go to OT.

Tye goes for a double at the end, but he can't get it. It goes to the judges. Meregali wins by refs decision.

Yuri Simoes vs Nicholas Meregali

I'm sure both are gassed, but they want that ADCC gold. It looks like Cyborg forfeited, so Tye Ruotolo will take home the bronze medal. Yuri coming out super aggressive. They are wrestling, but so far there hasn't been a lot of takedown attempts. I think they are saving it for the point period. Yuri goes for a single and Meregali sits down. Meregali gets a penalty for pulling guard. This seems like a big tactical mistake. Yuri goes down into half guard and Meregali is pushing him away. Meregali grabs a leg and goes to SLX. Yuri escapes.

As soon as points start Yuri stands up.

Yuri goes for a single, but can't complete it. Yuri goes for another, but again can't finish. More handfighting and Meregali tries a single leg. Meregali pulls guard again and eats another penalty.

Yuri enters Meregali's closed guard, but Meregali opens and Yuri tries an over under pass. Meregali can't get anything going and if he doesn't get more aggressive with his guard he will lose. The ref warns Yuri about stalling. Yuri tries to dive over the guard, but can't get anything going. Meregali tries DLR and off-balance Yuri, but seems to tired to some up. Yuri tries an ankle lock that isn't close at all. Meregali tries and SLX sweep, but he's too tired to finish. There is less the 2 min left and unless something changes Yuri is going to win. Meregali is defending his guard well, but he has no offense and Yuri isn't giving him any openings. Yuri wins on points and becomes the open weight champion.

Gordon Ryan vs Andre Galvao

The moment is finally here and they're on the mat. They are handfighting and Galvo hits him with a hard doubleg. Gordon goes for an outside heelhook, but he can't get the finish. Galvao goes back into his guard and Ryan tries another heelhook and then a wrestle up, but he can't get anything. Another SLX entry that turns into a wrestle up and Gordon has a rear waist lock. Gordon has to let it go and goes back to halfguard passing. Gordon flattens out Galvao and is looking to remove his knee from half guard. Galvao gets and underhook back, but its too shallow. Gordon is now trying to raise Galvaos's arms and Gordon takes the back as points start. Gordon gets the body triangle and receives 3 points. Gordon tries to choke the face, but can't get the tap. They are handfighting from the back and Gordon is switching sides with the bodytriangle to rack up points.

Galvao's arm is now trapped and Gordon is digging his arm in for the choke. Galvao is doing a good job of defending with 1 hand, but he can't do this forever. Gordon is up by 12 points with 5 min left. Galvao's traps are saving him. Gordon tries to crank his face. Gordon using both hands to insert the choke now and Gordon gets the tap. Gordon wins the superfight.

That's it for ADCC 2022. I hope you enjoyed the play by play and I'll have a breakdown up in a few days.

Comments

  1. Recommendation. State the name of fighter who wins. "He" is difficult. Example: Gordon Ryan wins by RNC. Otherwise, its a little bit of guesswork based on description as both are "he."

  2. I would like how long the matches last or at least approximately. Did they go 3 or 25 minutes?

  3. Mixed results for Team B - Nicky Rod & Craig Jones won, but Nicky Ryan, Jay Rod, and Crelensten lost.

    1. Yeah, but I figured that would happen. I think for their first year as a team it isn't too bad. The fact that they got that many people into ADCC is a win IMHO.
