EBI 20 The Absolutes Play-by-Play

 


I believe this is EBI's second comeback event and this time we have the big boys. This is an absolute tournament and it features quite a few big names. We have Nicky Rod, Kyle Griffith, Giancarlo Bodoni, Kyle Boehm, Roosevelt Souza and Andre Porfirio all competing. This is a good line up of ADCC level talent.  


Intro


Right now they are just going over the history of EBI and talking about the various competitors. There is also going to be a women's match. Looks like there is no mollywop rules. I'm disappointed.


Nick Rodriguez vs Eziquel Zurita

They just started the intro and are showing clips from the last EBI. I hope they have the mollywop rule in place, so we don't have to see a bunch of stalling to OT victories.


Nicky gets into bodylock position an works to pass. It takes a while, but he gets it and has more than 7min left to work.

Nicky goes for an anaconda, but it allows Zurita to escape to his feet.

They're fighting on the feet now, but it's mostly handfighting. The get down rule comes into play and Nicky starts from butterfly guard. He explodes up and swings around Zurita's turtle.

Zurita rolls and Nicky gets side control. He locks up a kimura and then falls to the side and locks in a yoko sankaku jime. Nicky tightens the triangle and gets the tap. A very technical performance.

Luke Griffith vs Franco Pana

Pana is playing on top and Luke on bottom. Pana is much bigger and putting the pressure. 

Griffith with a nice butterfly sweep to double leg. Griffith passes to mount from a bodylock.

Griffith, puts pressure down and wins by smoother.


Andrew Kimler vs Maxim Cote

They start by clinching up. Kimler is much bigger than Cote and hits him with a foot sweep to take him down. Cote almost sweeps him from butterfly guard and stands up.

Kimler hits a nice double leg.

Kimler in closed guard working for a kimura. Cote breaks open the cloes guard and tries to pass halfguard. He almost gets to northsouth, but Kimler bench presses him off. Cote flattens Kimler from half guard and moves to mount. 

Cote is trying to isolate an arm, but he can't get it. He moves to a mounted triangle and its close, but Kimler is too big. Kimler gets on top and as soon as he escapes the triangle he passes.

Cote goes for a half guard sweep, but as he is sweeping Kimler catches him in a kimura trap. Kimler goes for an armbar, but Cote escapes. This is a great match.

Kimler on bottom again and Cote flattens him out and passes to mount. Kimler kips out and grabs a leg. He goes for an outside heelhook and gets the tap.


Giancarlo Bodoni vs Austin Baker

They start out on the feet. and Baker pulls guard. Bodoni goes for a bodylock pass and Baker almost hits an inverted armlock. Baker wrestles up and Bodoni goes for an arm in guillotine. 

Baker escapes and now he goes for the bodylock on Bodoni. Bodoni frames him away and gets to butterfly guard. Bodoni hip heists up and gets to a front headlock. He spins to the back and now Bodoni is on Bakers back with 1 hook in. 

Bodoni tries to trap the arm. but can't quite get it. Baker tries to escape and Bodoni mounts him. Bodoni tries to walk the arm up to isolate the right arm. Bodoni is trying to smoother Baker, but he can't get it. The arm is still isolated though. Bodoni tries to set up a triangle, but gets rolled. Bodoni has an omoplata though.

Bodoni switches to an inside heelhook, but Baker stands and escapes. Baker tries to run around the guard, but Bodoni gets to half guard. Bodoni tries to wrestle up, but makes a terrible mistake and pulls Baker into mount on top of him. He manages to escape and gets back to half guard.

Baker is going for a bodylock, but can't get much going. They are stuck in this position with about 1 min left. Baker almost gets the smash pass, but Bodoni defends. They go to OT.

In OT Bodoni starts on Bakers back. Bodoni seems to be having trouble with Baker's size. Bodoni goes for a choke and Baker escapes.

Bodoni works his escapes and gets out. He had a faster escape than Baker.

Bodoni back on Baker's back. Baker tries to roll out, but Bodoni follows him. Bodoni can't seem to break Baker's grips to get anything going, but he does have a good amount of ride time. Bodoni gets the full ride time that round.

Baker on Bodoni's back now.  Bodoni rolls and removes a hook. Bodoni wiggles free.

Bodoni on the back now. Bodoni isn't going after the choke very hard. Baker rotates and escapes somewhat quickly.

Baker on the back now. Bodoni rolls into turtle. Baker goes to the Suluev stretch, but Bodoni slips out. Bodoni wins by ride time.


Kyle Boehm vs Travis Moore

They start standing up and Kyle sits to guard. Kyle trying to work his knee shield and he inverts for the legs. Kyle is in the saddle now with double trouble. He passes the auxiliary leg across and gets the inside heelhook before he can connect his hands. 


Roosevelt Souza vs Angel Lugo

It starts with Souza sitting to guard. Grabs a kimura from half and almost twists off Lugo's arm. Lugo wiggles out, but is now on bottom. Souza goes for the kimura from top half now. He rolls over and goes for an armbar. Lugo gets out again and the crowd starts to cheer. As the go, Souza inverts and catches and inside heelhook. Quick work. 


David Vieria vs Pat Shagoli

Pat slides to guard and inverts for the legs. They're in 50/50 now. David is mostly defending and Pat looks hungry for legs.

Pat tries to throw his leg over for an armbar, but David saw it coming. Pat coming on top in 50/50. David holding his arm to prevent the heelhook. They are both sitting again now. Pat gets a grib on the heel and rips the inside heelhook. David screams and Pat gets the win. 


Dan Martinez vs Andre Porfirio

This the final match of the first round. Andre sits to guard. Andre working knee shield now. Dan steps inside and Andre goes to a waiter position. He gets into butterfly ashi and almost gets an ankle lock. Dan gets the foot off his hip and moves into outside ashi. Andre looks to get the position back and Dan rolls away as quickly as possible. 

Dan goes for a knee slice and has really good position. He is grinding Andre out now. Dan is taking him to crossface city now and gets his leg free. Dan is in side control now. 

Andre tries to spin out and Dan goes for the back. Andre manages to get away. Dan putting pressure down from headquarters now, but Andre is holding his leg and looking for a leg lock. Andre goes for the K-guard entry , but tries to finish with an ankle lock. Dan moves to the back, but Andre still has his foot. Dan tries to move to the back, but Andre cranks the ankle lock and gets the tap. 


Mario Gonzalez vs Sam Barbosa (special match)

This match isn't part of the tournament. They start off hand fighting. Sam sits down and lets Mario pass his guard. Mario is trying to move to mount. Sam is isolating the arm now. Sam finally escapes and goes back to sitting guard. 

Mario gets to the front headlock, but Sam escapes to half. Sam lets himself get passed. Mario mounts and goes for the armbar. Mario extends, but Sam turns his elbow and escapes and the crowd cringes.

Mario goes back to passing half guard and passes again. Mario moves to mount again. Sam's arm is isolated now, but he manages to escape. Sam let's Mario pass again. Mario goes for an Americana, but Sam defends. Mario is looking to pass again. Mario fakes a leg entry and then passes. Mario is in knee on belly again and Sam is just defending. Sam has shown great defense this match, but zero offense. Mario uses a leg pin pass to get to side control again. Mario tries to dive on a kimura, but can't get it and it ends with Mario in mount.  

Now in OT Mario is working the armlock. Mario extends the arm, but Sam wiggles and wiggles until he gets out. I looked very close, but Sam doesn't seem phased. Sam starts on the back. After a bit Mario spins and escapes. 

Mario starts from spiderweb again. Mario extends the arm and gets the tap. Sam has 25 sec to get the tap. Mario escapes instantly. Mario wins.


Nick Rodriguez vs Luke Griffith

Luke sits to guard and Nicky follows him into half guard. They are both looking for position now and Luke it using the kneeshield to deal with Nicky pressure. So far they seem to be stalemated. Nicky flattens Luke, but Like entangles his legs. They're in 50/50 and they're both looking for feet. Luke gets a bite on the outside heel hook first and Nicky rolls to escape and comes back on top. 

Nicky gets the body lock and he's goin wild. He passes and Luke goes for a buggy choke. Nicky slams out of him and moves to mount. Nicky is looking to isolate the left arm now. 

Luke bridges and escapes. Nicky is standing over him now. Nicky dives in for the body lock. Nicky quickly moves to mount without much effort. Nicky has better isolation of the arm now. Luke his doing a good job bridging and he kips out to butterfly guard.

Nicky is on top of him in half guard now and tries to jump over for a guillotine. Luke manages to escape, but Nicky is on the bodylock again. Luke is breathing hard and Nicky starts covering his mouth. They go to OT.

Luke is on Nicky's back. Nicky explodes like crazy and gets out in 6 sec. Nicky on the back now. Luke rolls and tries to do the same thing, but rolls into an armbar. Nicky Rod wins. 


Andrew Kimler vs Austin Baker


Giancarlo Bodoni is injured and out of the tournament. Baker is replacing Bodoni and we have 2 big dudes ready to mix it up. Baker tries a foot sweep, but misses. Then he goes for an armdrag to single leg and hits a bit takedown. Baker on the ground past the guard, but is having trouble moving up the body. Baker moving up to mount now and gets it with Kimler's arms over his head. Baker moves to an armbar and Kimler is trying to defend, but Baker has good control of him. Baker separates the hands and gets the armbar.  


Kyle Boehm vs Roosevelt Souza


It starts with Souza sitting to guard. Kyle tries to roll for a kimura, but can't get it. Souza trying to work some sitting guard now. After a while he stands up and Kyle tries to pull into a leg lock. Souza escapes and re-engages into Kyle half guard. Action has slowed now as Souza is sitting in Kyles half guard. Souza looks a bit frustrated by Kyle's guard. Kyle tries to invert on a leg, but Souza moves away. 

Not much is happening here. Souza is shutting how Kyle's offense, but can't get anything going himself. Kyle enters the saddle as Souza tries a standing pass. Souza tries to run, but can't. He falls and Kyle taps him with an inside heelhook.


Pat Shigoli vs Andre Porfirio


Pat slides into guard again and they start hand fighting. Andre sits on and ankle lock and Pat acts like its nothing. Andre on top and Pat working DLR. Pat is off balancing Andre, but it doesn't work. Pat hits an armdrag, then comes up on a single leg. Andre tries to flee and Pat sits to a leg lock, but Andre escapes. Pat enters a leg entanglement and Andre goes for an anklelock. Pat gets on top. Andre goes for an ankle lock from the bottom and it helps him get back to the top. Pat working the DLR now and inverting. Andre looking to pass now, but Pat is stopping everything Andre throws at him. 

Pat trying to invert for a leg, but Andre is on to him. The pace has slowed now and Andre is working some leg pin passing. Pat inverts on a leg, but can't get a bite on the heel. Pat goes for a false reap and gets a sweep. Andre goes for the legs now and they enter 50/50. They start working leg locks and then they escape back to the feet. Pat goes for another false  reap and enters 50/50. Neither can get anything going and  they go to OT.

Andre on the back first. Pat spins, but Andre is on him like glue. Pat starts spinning again and eventually escapes. Pat's turn now. Andre tries quickly spinning, but Pat is on him. He tries to be a little more technical now and escapes. Andre's turn now and Pat spins out in 5 sec. It's pat's turn now and Andre goes wild, but Pat is going for sub after sub. Andre escapes though. Andre on on back now and Pat goes crazy and Andre is doing his best to control him. This is really close with Pat on Andre's back. Andre escapes as Pat tries to switch to the triangle. Andre wins. This match was a nail biter. 


Fedor Nikolov vs TBA


I guess Fedor his fighting the Cote guy from before. I don't know why they did this mystery fighter thing. Anyway Cote hits him with an amazing sasae tsuikomi ashi and looks to pass from the top. Fedor goes for a dead orchard, but Cote manages to slip out and get back on top.  Cote is in Fedor's closed guard and Fedor is trying to pull him back into rubber guard. Cote gets to half guard and is trying to pass with pressure. Cote goes to the bodylock and almost gets the pass.

Cote still working to try to pass kneeshield and he eventually gets to mount. Fedor pushes him back and Cote is in a Kabbib mount. Cote tries to move up, but when he does Fedor escapes. Fedor  enters the saddle from the bottom and works towards the heelhook, but Cote escaspes. 

Fedor tries to go back to the rubber guard, but not much is happening. Cote start pressure passing again, but there isn't much time. Goes to OT.

Cote on the back first and he's getting really rough on the face. Cote is in total control on the back. Cote gets the full 2 min ride time. Fedor starts in the spiderweb. Fedor extends Cote's arm completely, but he doesn't tap. Eventually Cote escapes. Cote on the back now and after a while he moves to an armbar. Fedor escapes. Fedor on the back now, but Cote quickly escapes. Cote on the back and Fedor escapes quickly. Fedor on the back  and after a while Cote escapes. Cote wins on ride time.


Nick Rodriguez vs Austin Baker


Nicky Rod has been looking almost unbeatable, but lets see what Baker has for him. Nicky sits and then wrestles up to a bodylock. He puts Baker down and tries to bodylock, but Baker gets up and Nicky chases him down and takes out a cameraman and Eddie Bravo. They reset with Nicky on top and Baker tries to get to a leg, but Nicky smashes him. Nicky is working from the bodylock now. 

Nicky switches his hips and passes to side control. Nicky now moves to mount after he can't get anything going from side control. Nicky has Baker's right arm over his head and is applying a lot of pressure. Baker gets his arm back, but he's still in a terrible position. Nicky moves that arm right back and looks like he's in total control.  Nicky goes to the mounted triangle and rolls to his back. Baker taps and Nicky gets the sub. 


Andre Porfirio vs Kyle Boehm


This match will determine who will face Nicky Rod. Both pull guard at the same time and are look for legs. Andre goes for an ankle lock, but Kyle survives and then goes for an ankle lock himself. Kyle goes for an outside heelhook now, but can't get it. Kyle comes on top now and Andre goes for another ankle lock and Kyle's ankle bend in a nasty way, but he escapes and goes for another outside heelhook. Andre escapes. 

Kyle dives over the guard for a kimura and almost has an ushiro sankaku jime, but his leg is trapped in half guard. Andre is stuck in the position and is in a lot of trouble. Kyle can go for the arm or the neck. Andre shows good defense, but it allows Kyle to get onto his back. Kyle works to trap the arm and then works to dig the RNC. Kyle locks the RNC over Andre's jaw and Andre  looks in pain, so he eventually taps. Kyle Boehm will face, Nicky Rod.


Paola Ambriz vs Mercedes White


The B-team fighter Paola comes out and they start handfighting. Not much is happening so White pulls guard. I didn't realize this was combat JJ. They start slapping each other and Paola drops back for a leg lock. She gets a slap for her troubles. White starts slapping Paola's thigh for some reason. They're both slapping weird places. They're about to fall off the mat and Paola gets on top and starts going slap crazy until she can get the back. 

White escapes the back and gets to 3/4 mount on Paola. White is working an arm triangle now, but it doesn't look like she's in a position to finish. White gets the giftwrap and starts slapping. Unfortunately she loses her balance and falls back to guard. White is trying to work rubber guard now. 

They've been stuck in this position for a while and White starts slapping her from rubber guard. There isn't much time left and it looks like they're going to OT. Paola is on the back first and has good control, but White is doing a good job getting her back to the floor. It seems white is out, but the ref isn't calling it as Paola tries to move to an armbar. Paola goes for another armbar and gets the tap. White has 82 sec to get the submission. She takes the spiderweb position. Paola tries to walk over White's head, but white has good control and extends the arm to get the tap and win, but quicker submission. 


Nick Rodriguez vs Kyle Boehm


We are here at the finals now. Nicky Rod pulls guard, wrestles up to a bodylock and puts Kyle down straight into a bodylock pass. Nicky is being patient and trying to step over a knee. Kyle gets an underhook back and breaks the bodylock. Kyle tries to use inverted guard and Nicky instantly passes. Nicky is doing a good job of controlling Kyle and then cradles Kyle. Nicky start smothering with his hand and pressuring him. Nicky moves to north south and looks for opening on Kyle's arms. Nicky goes into knee on belly and then mount. Kyle escapes and Nicky bails to side control. Nicky has the giftwrap, but Kyle shucks it off. Kyle eventually gets back to guard.  

Nicky is looking to pass from the outside and Kyle is waving his legs around. Nicky sits to guard and tries to trick Kyle into standing up. Kyle doesn't bite on it and stays on his back. Nicky threatens an ankle lock and then jumps on a bodylock pass, which he completes. 2 min left with Nicky in sidecontrol. Kyle isn't really going anything and it seems like he's trying to survive until OT. Kyle gets back to guard, but there is only 1 min left. They seem to be slowing down and conserving energy for OT at this point. 

Kyle is on the back and Nicky explodes to the side and wiggles out in 11 sec. Nicky on the back now and Kyle almost escapes, but Nicky grabs his neck and squeezes hard. Kyle taps and Nicky Rod is the winner.
