WNO 16 Pena vs Rodriguez Play-by-Play




The main event has been changed and now it is Nicky Rod vs Felipe Pena. The match has also been changed to 30min, which I personally think this is a good thing. We should be in for a some good matches.  


We are getting started now with the pre-show and breakdown of the matches. The analysis is being done by Caio Terra, Jake Watson, Kendall Reusing and Corey Stockton. They're picking who they think will win now.

Thien Luu-Nguyen vs Dominic Meija

Dominic vs Thien is getting started now. They start standing, but are starting out a bit slow. Just feeling each other now with some foot sweeps. Thien is starting to increase his intensity a bit now, but he still hasn't turned it up yet. Thien with a snap down and he's trying to drag Dominic down, but the head slips out. Thien with another snap, but Dominic almost catches a double leg. The ref warns them about their lack of activity. Dominic immediately gets more aggressive and drags Thien down to the back. after a few seconds Thien gets back to the feet, but Dominic hits a slick duck under to takehow down again. Dominic works a pass and almost completes the half guard pass, but gets swept. Thien is on top now trying to pass and Dominic gets to butterlfy guard. Dominic hits a hooksweep from there and is back on top. Dominic has Thien pinning in half guard, but Thien uses the lockdown to get out of danger. Thien does to a straight ankle lock, but Dominic is able to get free and goes straight into a pass. Dominic passes to mount and goes for a mounted triangle. Thien gets out and Dominic is back on top trying to pass. Thien wrestles up on a double leg, Dominic goes for a guillotine and Thien defends. Thien wrestles up on a single leg and gets it. Thien then drops back for and inside heelhook, but Dominic extracts his leg and goes into a bodylock pass. Thien defends well and is now working from butterfly halfguard. There is less than 5 min left and Dominic is working his passing again. They return to standing and Dominic goes for a swing single and then a bodylock takedown. Thien tries a buggy choke, but there is nothing there. Dominic gets to the back and has an arm trapped. Thien spins and gets out of back mount. They are on the feet now and Thien looks exhausted. Dominic is bodylock passing again, but there is less than 1 min left. Thien stands up and jumps on a gullotine, but Dominic escapes. Dominic hits 1 more single leg and tries to take the back, but Thien escapes and time runs out. It started slowly, but turned into a good match. Dominic should win the decision.

Stephen Martinez vs Calon Sabino

The match is just getting started and this is a clash between a new black belt in Calon and older veteran Stephen. Calon is much taller, and we will see if that is an advantage or disadvantage for him. They are hand fighting very aggressively, until Calon pulls guard. Calon is working from closed guard now. Calon opens his guard and Stephen starts pressuring in. Stephen starts working a bodylock, but Calon tries to counter with an omoplata, but men a forced to give up their attacks. Calon goes back to the omoplata, but Stephen stands and pulls out. Stephen has a bodylock now and he is chest to chest. Stephen passes to mount and is pressuring Calon and smashing his face. Calon gets back to half guard, but Stephen doesn't let up on the pressure. Stephen gets a crossface from halfguard and passes to mount again. Stephen goes for an armtriangle, but Calon slips out.

There is less than 10 min left and Calon has been getting smashed for a while now. Calon gets back to half guard, but he can't escape Stephen's pressure. Stephen passes again. Stephen gets to mount again. Calon escapes again and Stephen passes again. Stephen goes to mount again. There haven't been too many sub attempts, but Stephen is big brothering Sabino and making things terrible for him. Stephen working to isolate arms from mount now. Calon escapes and gets to open guard. He has less than 3 min now to get the win, but Stephen has put him through a meat grinder. Calon stands, but he turns his back to do so and Stephen mat returns him hard and takes mount. Calon briefly tries a buggy choke, but it isn't close. Calon gets back to halfguard, but Stephen is just smoothering him. Stephen ends the match with knee on belly. Clear decision for Stephen Martinez.

Rene Sousa vs Kieran Kichuk

They start and Kichuk sits down. Rene is trying to dive around the guard. Sousa is trying to pass, but doesn't seem to want to get too deep into the guard. Kichuck spins and tries to get a leg. He can't quite get it though. Kichuk tries again, but Sousa shows some good defense and goes back to passing. Kichuck hit an armdrag and gets to top. As soon as he gets there he drops back for a leglock. Sousa extracts his leg and goes back to passing. Kichuck goes for a triangle and then an omoplata that makes Sousa roll out. Kichuck is happy to play bottom and lets Sousa go back to top position. Kichuck is trying to work his leglocks, but can't keep the entanglements. Kichuk is favored by the judges at the 10min mark. Sousa dives for a kimura and it looks pretty deep. Kichuck catches his back though and is looking to extract his arm. He does and is right on Sousa's back. Kichuk is getting close to the RNC. Sousa showing some good defense and gets to turtle. Sousa escapes and is looking to pass gaurd. Sousa goes for a diving kneecut, but can't quite get it. 

Kichuk goes for a triangle and Sousa almost catches his leg in a heelhook, but Kichuck calmly escapes. Sousa seems to be getting more confident. Kichuk is still ahead with the judges. Sousa tries to jump over Kichuk's guard and go directly to mount, but Kichuk almost heelhooks him for his troubles. Sousa goes for a double under pass and almost catches a darce. Sousa goes back to passing and Kichuk goes for another omoplata. As Sousa rolls through he catches Kichuks leg and finishes a kneebar. Impressive win.

Jasmine Rocha vs Amanda Bruse

Rocha and Bruse take the mats again and they're looking to run this back. Both are new black belts looking to make a name for themselves. They start with some wrestling and Bruse is looking for a few footsweeps. Rocha pulls guard and Bruse is passing aggressively from outside and goes for a guillotine from the top. Rocha gets her head out and is sitting and waiting for Bruse to come into her guard. She gets impatient and stands, tries to quickly pull, but Bruse gets an underhook and is pressing hard from the top. Bruse has a 1 armed guillotine and Rocha looks uncomfortable. Rocha trying to survive, and Bruse is trying to add some pressure, but she might not have it. Bruse in 3/4 mount now, but the guillotine has loosened. Bruse loses the guillotine, and Rocha soon escapes. Rocha looking to work her open guard now.

The judges are favoring Bruse, but there is still 10 min left. Bruse it moving side to side and tries a kneecut then drops back on a leg, but can't get anything. When she comes back on top Rocha tries to work her DLR guard, but Bruse shuts it down immediately. Rocha is working her closed guard now and trying to climb her legs up Bruse's back. Bruse stands and Rocha goes for k-guard and then a heelhook. Bruse goes for a leg lock of her own and then a guillotine. They trade leg locks again and then Bruse comes back on top. 

At the 5 min mark the judges are favoring Rocha. Bruse drop back to guard to work from there, but Rocha goes stright to an ankle lock. Amanda rolls and extracts her foot. Bruse is back on top now. Rocha is working her high closed guard now. Bruse stands and breaks the guard, she almost passes, but Rocha shows some good defense. Bruse starts trying to pass and dives on a neck. Rocha goes for an ankle lock, but Bruse counters with a better one. Rocha escapes and passes Bruse. Rocha is in north south with less than 2 mins left. Rocha is now close to the back and tries for a RNC, but Bruse defends. Rocha in 3/4 mount now. Now Rocha tries a wrist lock as she moves to mount. Rocha now goes for a smoother with 30 sec left and she gets it.

Oliver Taza vs Jonnatas Gracie

Taza is looking to spoil the WNO debut of Gracie like done to others. Taza is jumping up and down and looks pumps, while Gracie looks much more calm. They are standing and handfighting now, but not much is happening. They seem to be trying to wear each other down and testing reflexes with feints. Taza gets a nice single leg to trip and is trying to pass Gracie. Gracie is working his DLR guard, but Taza shuts it down. Gracie elevates Taza and tries to move to his back, but Taza catches his leg. Gracie tries to extract his leg, but Taza has a good grip. Gracie changes tactics and hits a berimbolo on Taza and almost gets his back. He can't get that, but gets to side control. Taza almost gets back to guard, but Gracie uses the bodylock and passes to the other side. Gracie has Taza in 3/4 mount now. Taza gets back to open guard and aggressively tries to pass. Gracie hits another pass. Taza gets back to open guard again, but he needs to pick it up if he wants to win. Taza goes to the false reap, but Gracie is on to it and escapes. 

Gracie is trying to pressure through Taza's guard. Taza tries to turtle and Gracie takes his back. Taza is defending well, but Gracie takes mount. Taza keeps rolling and he is now on top in Gracie's closed guard. There is a break in the action to check on one of Taza's cuts. The extra time should give both men a bit of a stamina boost. Taza stands to break the closed guard, but Gracie stands up as well and hits a koshi guruma on Taza. Gracie lands on top in mount. With less the 5 min left things are looking bad for Taza. Gracie has 3/4 mount and is looking to work a bodylock pass. Gracie slows down and the ref tell him to pick it up with 3 min left. Taza looks like he doesn't know what to do and is just defending. Gracie starts putting more pressure down and slowly tries to pass. Taza gets a knee shield in and goes to RDLR guard. Taza now stands and tries to wrestle. Gracie looks a bit fresher at this point. Taza sits grabs a leg and tries to come up on a single, but Gracie easily slips his leg out. Gracie should take this easily.

JT Torres vs Magid Hage

JT and Magid are both making their WNO debuts. JT looks energetic and Magid looks laid back as always. Magid tucks in his shirt and we get started. They start on the feet and JT is cautiously handfighting. Magid isn't backing down though. Magid gets a bit too relaxed and JT hits him with a de ashi barai and Magid falls down. Nasty foot sweep. JT working from half guard now and applying pressure. Magid tries a john wayne sweep, but JT shrugs it off. JT is close to the half guard pass now and he gets it. JT in knee on belly now, but Magid bridges and gets back to half guard. JT isn't backing off with the pressure though. JT slides his leg out of half guard and is working from side control now. 

JT has been smother Magid for several minutes now and Magid is starting to look tired. JT gets to mount for a second, but Magid, but him in 3/4 mount. Magid gets back to half and tries to work an underhook, but JT's pressure is just too great. JT goes back to smashing and Magid starting to look more desperate. Magid is trying to explode and get some offense going, but JT won't allow it. Magud gets back to open guard and goes for a reverse armbar. JT doesn't like that a moves back into Magid's half guard. JT passes to mount now. 

With 5 min left JT has mount with Magid's left arm isolated. Magid is doing a good job defending, but no matter what he goes, JT stays heavy on top of him. Magid gets back to half guard and JT has him crossfaced and flattened. With less than 3 min left Magid will need a miracle to win here. JT gets back to mount for a second before Magid recovers his half guard. JT seems to be trying to turn things up, but he can't crack Magid's defense. Magid turns and JT catches a wrist ride and uses that to take the back with 1 min left. They are handfighting for a while and then JT switches to an armbar, but Magid is trying to escape. They finish in the armbar position. This was 1 way traffic from JT.

Pedro Marinho vs Giancarlo Bodoni 

Bodoni and Pedro are up next and this is for the light-heavy weight belt. Bodoni looks stone cold serious. They are coming out hard with the wrestling. They trade foot sweeps and Pedro comes in for a double, but Bodoni sees it coming. Bodoni with the underhook and looking for a throw, but he gets foot swept by Pedro and has to scramble up back to his feet. Bodoni goes back to the underhook, but they move off the mat. They are trading foot sweeps and moving quite a bit, but neither can seem to get an edge. Pedro picks up a single leg, but lets go of it once Bodoni goes for his neck. Pedro picks up a single again and tries to kick Bodoni's leg out, but Bodoni stands strong and escapes. 

The judges favor Pedro at the 10 min mark and as soon as Pedro hears that he hits a big blast double. Pedro is on top now trying to pass. Pedro backs out and almost hits a leg drag. Bodoni is going for the flase reap now, but can't get it. Bodoni is throwing the kitchen sink as Pedro from RDLR guard. Pedro backs off and then moves back into half butterfly guard. They are both working, but they can't seem to get their games going. Bodoni is staying active, but Pedro is countering with pass attempts. Pedro jumps around and almost gets around the guard, but Bodoni pushes him off and escapes. 

With less than 5 min left, Bodoni is going to need to pick things up if he wants to take the belt from Pedro. Bodoni is trying to work his RDLR, but they are so sweaty at this point Pedro is easily escaping. Pedro is working from the outside trying to pass, but the mat is so wet he seems to be slipping. Perdo goes for a bodylock and almost gets the back, but they start up. They are wrestling now, but there is less than 2 min left. Bodoni tries a kani basami, but completely misses . They are standing again and Pedro hits him with a highlight reel de ashi barai. IPPON. They move around on the ground for the lest few seconds and Pedro should take the clear win.

Nicholas Rodriguez vs Felipe Pena

Nicky Rod and Pena will be finishing off the matches today. Nicky sits and then tries to wrestle up. Pena backs away and Nicky stands. Then Pena sits. Pena is trying to work his half butterfly guard and Nicky Rod is getting low and trying to get into a bodylock pass. Nicky stands and tries to walk around to north-south, but Pena follows him so Nicky drops down and goes back to trying pressure. Nicky tries to dive into a bodylock pass, but Pena shows good defense and frames him away.

Pena now tries to invert under from a knee shield, but can't get it. Nicky tries a smash pass, but Pena scoots away. Nicky stands and tries a leg pin pass and almost gets it. Pena defends and they reset. Pena is complaining about greasing now, but nothing happens. After a few min the ref comes in and wipes them down. They get back to the action now. Pena gets under Nicky Rod and almost entangles his leg, but the leg slips out and Nicky Rod resets. After another problem with Pena's corner, Nicky Rod gets in on a bodylock pass.

The judges are favoring Nicky Rod, but Pena manages to get out of the bodylock. Nicky Rod is going back to it though. Nicky Rod passes for a second, but Pena recovers his guard. Nicky trying to pass from long distance now. Nicky moves down and goes for another bodylock. He almost gets it, but then Pena hits an omoplata. Nicky Rod scrambles and escapes back to top position. Nicky going back to the well and works the body lock, but Pena pushes him off. Pena tries to invert from Z-guard, but Nicky drop back on a leg lock. He is fishing for an outside heelhook, but then Pena starts moving to his back. Nicky scrambles and Pena tries to hit him with a double leg. Nicky defends and Pena sits back down. 

They get back into the same pattern as before and the ref stops the action again to wipe them off. They go back to it and Pena goes for a gullotine and almost gets it, but Nicky gets out. They stop again because of Pena's contact lenses. Pena inverts under and takes top postion. Nicky Rod goes for ankle lock and Pena starts chasing the back. Nicky Rod is freaking out and scrambles like crazy. After a long sequence Nicky gets out and gets the top position. Pena is waving him in now, but Nicky stays disciplined. Pena seems to have more confidence now and Nicky Rod is slowing down a bit. Pena inverts for an armbar, but Nicky slips out. The judges are favoring Pena now and there is less than 10 min left. Nicky Rod has a good grip on the bodylock now, but Pena is defending. Nicky tris to jump around and gets a look at the back, but Pena recovers the guard. Nicky tries to jump over the guard, but Pena inverts and goes for the legs. Pena then tries to come up to the back, but Nicky shuts that down and he is back on top. Pena goes for a guliotine, but Nicky easily slips out and almost passes with the bodylock. Pena tries to pull his arm out for the inverted armbar, but the arm slips out. Nicky is persistent and gets Pena in another bodylock. With less than 5 min left, the match is up in the air. Nicky tries to blitz Pena and pass, but Pena shows some good defense. Nicky drops back for a leg lock, but then give up on it and comes back to top position. Nicky drops back on an ankle lock now. He changes to an outside heelhook now. It looks nasty, but Pena doesn't tap. Pena almost gets the back, but Nicky stands and gets out. There is less the 2 min left and they both look tired. Pena goes for a shoulder crunch, but he doesn't have anything on it. Time runs out and it is up to the judges. This was a close match. Pena gets the win and the crowd seems mixed on it.

This was a good event and I think all the matches are worth watching. The breakdown with stats should be coming soon, so be on the look out for that.
