Quintet4 Play-By-Play

 


The long awaited return of Quintet is here. We have 4 teams, Team Polaris(Gregor Gracie, Tarik Hopstock, Owen Livesey, Santeri Lilius, Jed Hue), Team Sakuraba(Kazushi Sakuraba, Haisam Rida, Tomoshige Sera, Daisuke Nakamura, Harry "Kimura" Grech), 10th Planet(Geo Martinez, Richie Martinez, Amir Alam, PJ Barch, Kyle Boehm) and the B-Team Bulls(Craig Jones, Nicky Ryan, Nicky Rod, Jay Rod, Jozef Chen). Besides watching to see who wins hopefully this will live up to the legacy of Quintet and deliver lots of fun interesting matches. Lets get to it.



 

Team Sakuraba vs Team 10th Planet


Tomoshige Sera vs BJ Barch


Sera sits to guard and PJ is slowly working back and forth. Sera tries a guillotine, but that just allows PJ to get chest to chest in half guard. Sera recovers and PJ stands and then hits a kneeslice. He goes from side to mount and then to the back.

PJ gets the RNC over the chin and then slips it under for the tap. PJ makes very quick work of Sera.


PJ Barch vs Kazushi Sakuraba

Sakuraba vs Barch next. PJ hits a footsweep on sakuraba and Saku plays guard for a few sec. Saku stands and PJ pulls guard. PJ enters SLX and uses it to sweep. PJ on top now and Saku showing decent guard retention. PJ drops back on an ankle lock and Saku escapes. PJ goes for it again and Saku screams "No, no, no, not yet, I'm still ok".Barch doesn't understand and stops for a sec, but Saku tells him he's ok. PJ laughs and they keep going. The ref gives Saku a penalty though. They start again from refs position and PJ gets on top. PJ drops back for another ankle lock. and it looks tight ,but Saku doesn't tap. Saku gets on top and goes for an anklelock of his own, but PJ easily escapes. PJ on top now almost passes, but they go off the mat.

PJ is chest to chest on top, looking to pass half guard. He gets the pass and tries to lock up a kimura. PJ is trying to isolate the arm for an armbar, but Saku is staying tight. Saku escapes, but PJ goes right back to side control. PJ goes for another kimura, but Saku immediately escapes. PJ comes back on top and easily passes with a double under pass. Saku rolls away and PJ catches him in a darce choke. Only about 45 sec left, but Saku isn't tapping although he is stuck in the darce. PJ tries to adjust, but it causes him to lose the choke. PJ tries a last ditch ankle lock, but can't get it before time runs out.


Richie Martinez vs Haisam Rida


Richie Martinez vs Haisam Rida up next. Rida comes out and is all over Richie. Richie seems nevous standing and sits to guard. Rida putting on a lot of pressure from top. Things have now slowed a bit and Richie seems to be gaining confidence as he tries to get to work from his guard. Rida goes for a torreando and gets to side for a sec, but Richie gets his guard back, but then Rida hits a smash pass and then works to the back. Richie Reverses him and gets on top. Rida on bottom hits a hip bump sweep
 and is not in mount. Rida is looking for an armbar and Richie uses the space to escape and get his guard back.

Rida working a halfguard pass, gets it and moves to mount. Rida just sitting on top and is in danger of getting a penalty, even though he is in mount. Richie gestures to the ref and they are stood up and given a penalty. In quintet they don't have much patience for stalling. Richie and Rida start pushing each other and almost get into a fight. The action stops.

They penalize Rida and let Richie take mount. Rida wastes no time, immediately escapes and gets on top of Richie. Rida has 2 penalties and if he gets one more he will be eliminated. Less than a min left and Rida is working hard to pass. He leaves an arm behind and Richie tries to lock up an armbar. He can't get it, but comes on top. They are both eliminated.


Geo Martinez vs Daisuke Nakamura

Geo Martinez vs Daisuke Nakamura starts. Geo pulls guard and quickly goes for a toeholds. Its tight, but Daisuke gets out. Daisuke tries to pass, but Geo gets a kimura and sweeps to mount. Daisuke rolls and Geo gets to his back. Geo trying to work his hand under the chin, but Daisuke is defending well. Geo now trying to lock it over the face and it looks painful, but Daisuke won't tap. Geo goes for the RNC again, but can't get to the chin, so he just cranks on the face. Geo tries to trap an arm as Daisuke tries to break free from the body triangle, but he can't quite get it. Daisuke grunting in discomfort, but doesn't appear to be in danger. Daisuke works his way out and tries to get a kimura from the back, but Geo isn't having it. Geo still on the back and still gong for the RNC, but can't get it. Daisuke survives and they are both eliminated.


Harry Gretch vs Kyle Boehm


Harry Gretch vs Kyle Boehm is next. If Gretch doesn't win this they are out. Boehm pulls guard. He tries to underhook, the leg, then gives up and goes to rubber guard. Gretch gets out and there is an eye poke. Gretch blinks a few times and tells the ref he's ok. Gretch tries to jump over the guard for a kimura, but Boehm is wise to it and defends. Gretch goes for it again and even gives his back to do it. Gretch ends up on top in half guard though. Gretch tries to rip the kimura and can't get it, but it allows him to pass guard. He continues to work for the kimura for a while, but Boehm recovers his guard. Boehm works from guard and he's looking to get something going, but can't get anything going. Gretch is doing more here, but it is up to him to win everything for team Saku. Gretch tries another diving kimura, but this time Boehm is ready and ends up taking Gretch's back.

Boehm has a tight body triangle and only needs to hold for 2 more min to let his team move to the next round. The ref calls for action and Gretch tries to escape. Gretch spins out to guard and taunts Boehm and tells him to attack. Boehm doesn't go for it and instead kicks Gretch in the face. The ref doesn't like that and restarts them from refs position and Boehm rolls to guard. Boehm seems to content to ride the time out and the match ends in a draw. 10th moves to the next round.


B-Team Bulls vs Team Polaris

Nicky Rod vs Owen Livesey

Nicky Rod vs Owen up first. Owen hits a foot sweep on Nicky rod, but Nicky doesn't seem to care. He stands and then sits to guard. Nicky with the armdrag to wrestle up. Nicky almost gets it, but they go out of bounds. Nicky pulls again and hits a snap down. Nicky tries to come on top, but Owen escapes. They lock up standing and Owen tries a double the Nicky stuffs. Nicky pulls guard again and tries to wrestle up, but can't get anything going. Nicky tries to wrestle up with an ankle pick and Owen flies off the mat. They reset and Nicky tries the same thing again. Owen goes for another foot sweep, but doesn't get it this time. Nicky pull guard, wrestles up on an ankle pick and get to the body lock pass. He quickly passes and they move them back to the center.

From side control, Owen explodes up to his feet, but Nicky catches him in the front headlock. Now they are arguing about the reset and where their hands are. Owen slips out of the front headlock and Nicky sits to guard. Nicky tries to wrestle up again, but can't get it. He then shoots for a double leg, but Owen just throws him off and Nicky falls to the floor. After a reset, Nicky sits again and then explodes into a double leg and is now on top of Owen with about 2 min left. Owen explodes up and they are standing again. Nicky sits and tries another wrestle up, but can't get it. Nicky Rod now seems more aggressive and tries a snap down, but Owen gets away. Nicky pushes forward and Owen tries a hip throw, but messes it up and falls down. Nicky is on top of him and Owen rolls to guard. Nicky moves laterally and Owen tries to wrestle up on a single, but Nicky sprawls on him. Nicky tries to get a kimura and a backtake, but there isn't enough time. The match ends in a draw.


Jed Hue vs Jay Rod

Now we have Jed Hue vs Jay Rod and Jed sits to guard. Jed inverts into a leg lock. Jay escapes and Jed goes for a choi bar that locks like it almost breaks Jay's arm. Jay manages to get on top afterwards and almost passes. Now Jay is in 3/4 mount. Jay now going for a reverse half nelson, but Jed escapes back to half guard. Jay hits a kneecut, but Jed recovers his guard. Jay hits it again and settles into north south. Jed and the B-team seem to be talking trash. Jed gets back to guard and then Jay passes again. Jay mounts and works to isolate an arm. Jed trash talking while mounted. Jay tries to take the back and Jed escapes and stands. Before Jed can smile and admire his work, Jay blast doubles him and passes into an armbar. Jed barely escapes and gets back to guard. Jay passes again like its nothing and moves to mound. Jed tries to hit and escapes, so Jay moves to side control. Jed gets back to guard and gets to 50/50, Jed then tries to take the back, but Jay put him back down. From the top jay goes for a toehold, but it isn't close. Jed stands for a sec and tries a flying triangle, but it isn't close. Jay passes guard again and moves to mount, but there are only 10 sec left. Jed talks trash as times runs out. The match was a draw.

Jozef Chen vs Tarik Hopstock

Tarik Hopstock vs Jozef Chen now. Tarik sits to guard and Chen is agressively chain passing. Tarik dives for a leg and looks to lock up and ankle lock. Chen dives for the back, but can't get it. Chen passes over halfbutterfly guard and gets to mount. Chen sitting up striaght from mount and looking to isolate and arm. Tarik turns and Chen is looking to hit a giftwrap on it. Chen is looking at an armbar, but Tarik reverses him. Tarik is now in Chen's closed guard. Tarik sits back for an ankle lock and Chen stands and passes his guard. He then moves to the back. Chen flattens Tarik out on his stomach and looks to dig his hand under the chin. He can't get a hand in, so he rolls him to his side, but keeps back control. Chen is constantly looking for the RNC, but can't get it. Chen give up on it and tries to go for the armbar. He switches to the triangle and then back to the armbar. Tarik's arm is fully extended and it looks very close, but he escapes. Tarik is on top now looking to pass. Tarik moves into HQ position and tries to float pass, but Chen pushes him off. Tarik goes for a kneecut, but can't get it. Chen hits a dummy sweep that puts Tarik on his butt, but pulls guard afterwards. Tarik tries to pass, but time runs out.

Nicky Ryan vs Santeri Lilius

Nicky Ryan vs Santeri Lilias is up next. They both look to work some wrestling and Nicky shoots for a double, but it looks like he hits a brick wall. He picks up a single leg instead, but can't finish it. Santeri slaps Nicky and tries a foot sweep, but it doesn't work. Nicky replies with a double leg and puts Santeri down to guard. Santeri throws up a leg attack from outside ashi, but Nicky Counters with a pretzel bolo. Nicky is on the back now, but he isn't very secure. Santeri escapes back to guard. Nicky tries to pass from half, but can't get much going. Santeri almost sweeps Nicky, but he is able to recover quickly. Santeri is looking to reap the leg now, but Nicky tries to counter with an aoki lock. Santeri fight the hands and he escapes. Santeri is on top looking to pass now. Nicky is trying to work RDLR and then switches to underhook DLR. Santeri is moving back and forth and he almost passes. As he tries to pass he gets tripped up and Nicky comes on top. There are 2 min left and this match looks pretty close right now. Nicky has slowed a bit as they wrestle on the sfeet. Nicky sits to guard and Santeri is looking to pass, but there is only 1 min left. Time runs out and the match is a draw.

Craig Jones vs Gregor Gracie

The last match will determine it all. Craig Jones is going against Gregor Gracie, who is looking much smaller than before. Craig comes out and tries a little foot sweep and then goes for a guillotine and tries to sit to finish it. Gracie gets out and then they stand up. Craig screws up and judo throw and just falls into side control. He escapes, gets on top and then moves to HQ position. Gracie gets to butterfly guard, but Craig keeps the pressure on him. Craig is now trying to pass from half guard. Craig gets to side control and then moves to north south. Craig looks for a darce, but that gives Gracie space to escape. Craig goes for a kneecut and is now in side control. Gracie gets back to guard and Craig hits a highstep pass on him. Craig tries to move to the back, but Gracie gets back to guard again. Craig in half again and he moves to side control. Craig goes for a cobra choke/cowcatcher, but can't get it. Gracie escapes again and it looks like this will go to the judges. B-team has been more aggressive in almost every match. With 30 sec left Craig goes for a toehold, but can't get it. Craig on top in half guard with a nogi Ezequiel. Gracie waves his finger saying "no, no, no" and time runs out.  The match ends in a draw and since this is final match it will go to the judges. The B-team bulls win and will move on. 


Haruki Ishiguro vs Mei Yamaguchi(non-tournament match)

Haruki Ishiguro vs Mei Yamaguchi up next. Haruki pulls guard and starts to work her closed guard. Mei is playing cagey from the outside and then she goes into the closed guard. Haruki goes into a modified x-guard and then moves into a kneebar. Mei slips out, but Haruki switch to a calfslicer. The calfslicer is getting deeper, but Mei grabs a toehold and Haruki let's go. Haruki is on top now and works a halfguard pass. She moves to mount, but Mei gets back to guard, Haruki passes to mount again and Mei reverses her and get back on top. Haruki is working her guard and Mei is trying to pass from the outside.

Haruki goes for a k-guard like position and works for a kneebar. Mei slips out and Haruki moves on top. Mei tries to wrestle up and Haruki jump on a guillotine. Mei slips her head out and then drops back for an ankle lock. Haruki tries to counter with a berimbolo, but she can't get it. Haruki on top now and she passes and works for another knee bar. Mei toughs it out for a second, but then taps. Haruki Ishiguro wins by kneebar.


B-Team Bulls vs 10th Planet


Jay Rodriguez vs Amir Allam

First up Jay Rod vs Amir Allam. Jay comes out hard and stuffs a double and then hits a mat return. Amir rolls into a kneebar and it is tight, but Jay escapes. Amir then goes to an omoplata and Jay rolls out and almost gets wrist locked. Jay escapes and goes back to passing from the top. Jay passes with a kneecut and Amir re-guards and goes for an armbar that is tight. Jay uses the reverse hitchhiker and escapes. Amir goes the an ankle lock, but Jay escapes and passes. Jay mounts for a second, but Amir gets to SLX, but Jay quickly passes again and moves back to mount. Amir gets back to half guard and then moves to rubber guard. Jay shuts it down and moves to a bodylock pass. Amir wrestles up from halfguard and almost hits a takedown, but Jay reverses and almost takes his back. Jay on top in side control now. Amir goes into back side 50/50 and hit a toehold, but Jay tries to reverse him with a bolo. He can't get it and when he tries to come up gets stuck in a triangle. Jay escapes and stands. Amir follows him and shoots a double that knocks Jay off his feet, but Jay scrambles up. Jay takes him down and tries to pass from half guard and Amir tries to sweep. Amir goes back to rubber guard, but Jay once again shuts it down and moves to mount. Jay tries to go for an armbar, but it is way too loose. Time runs out and the match is a draw.

Nicky Rod vs PJ Barch

PJ Barch vs Nicky Rod, but this is a 4 min match because of the weight different. Nicky grabs a leg and hits a quick single leg. Nicky is working the body lock pass, but PJ stand up. Nicky takes him down again and works on passing from the outside. Nicky is working the bodylock again, but he's having a surprising amount of problems passing PJ's guard. Nicky stands and goes for a leg drag, but PJ defends and Nicky goes back to the bodylock, so PJ goes to closed guard. Nicky breaks the guard and they reset. Nicky looking to pass from the outside and PJ wrestles up on him and takes him down, but Nicky just shoves him off. Nicky gets back on top and time runs out. The match goes to a draw.


Craig Jones vs Richie Martinez

Craig Jones vs Richie Marteinez up next. Richie sits and Craig lets himself get put into SLX. Craig grabs his leg and you can hear 10th planet yelling to get out of there. Richie starts to use halfguard and Craig stands and toeholds him. Richie screams and taps out. Craig wins by toehold.


Craig Jones vs Geo Martinez


Geo Martinez vs Craig Jones up next. This is also a reduced time match since there is a larger weight different. Craig sits down and Geo sits back and they play footsies. Geo tries a toehold and Craig almost berimbolos him. Craig goes for the bolo again and gets it. they roll around a bit and Craig gets him in a rear triangle and then extends the arm to the armbar. Craig Jones wins by armbar.

Craig Jones vs Kyle Boehm


Craig Jones vs Kyle Boehm is the last match. If Kyle doesn't sub Craig, B-team will win. They start with some wrestling and Kyle is really pulling on Craig's head. Kyle goes for a kneetap, but it isn't close. Craig hits an armdrag and almost takes the back as the go to the ground. Kyle gets ahold of his leg and pulls him into outside ashi. Kyle switches to 50/50 and tries and ankle lock, but Craig has no reaction. Kyle moves to outside ashi again and Craig tries to smash him, but Kyle gets away. Craig goes for a kneecut, but can't get it. Kyle tries to entangle a leg and Craig bolos him from the top. Craig almost gets to back, but Kyle slips off. Craig is trying to pass, but Kyle pulls him into a leg entanglement. Kyle goes for the ankle lock and Craig tries to counter with a toehold. Kyle uses RDLR and Craig just walks around his guard and tries to berimbolo him again, but can't secure the back. Kyle moves to outside ashi again and Craig moves in to smash him, but Kyle gets out. Kyle cranks an ankle lock that locks painful, but Craig again has no reaction. Craig goes back to passing from the outside. Kyle gets Craig in the saddle and Craig counters with a toehold, but can't finish. Craig drops back for and anklelock, but Kyle says no. Kyle goes for a toehold and Eddie Bravo yells "Crank it" and Craig waves his finger at him. After a few more seconds time runs out. The match is a draw. As Kyle was the last member of 10th planet, The B-Team wins.



The B-Team Bulls WIN

This was a great event and it finished in about 3 hours, which is amazing. All the matches were really good and even the ones without finishes had excitging action and interesting technique.
