WNO 20 Night of Champions Play-by-Play

 


WNO is back with its biggest event of the year. 5 belts are on the line and this is Gordon's first match of the year I believe. Blow you can see the brackets for the 2 tournaments.






On top of those we have Nathiely de Jesus vs Raphaela Guedes, Raphael Lovato Jr vs Ricardo Evangelista, and Gordon Ryan vs Patrick Gaudio all on the main card. Let's get started now with the preliminary matches.


Stephan Banta vs Thomas Bracher


Stephan Banta vs Thomas Bracher is up first. They tie up and get into an over under clinch. Banta hits a kosoto gake and is trying to work a bodylock from the top.

Banta almost passes, but Bracher gets a leg back in. Bracher tries to stand, but Banta threatens his back, so he lays back down. Banta slows a bit a releases his pressure allow Bracher to get back to butterfly guard. Bracher gets to closed guard and action grinds to a halt. Bracker opens guard to attack and Banta immediately tries to jump over and then converts it to a body lock Banta leg rides for a bit, but then he tries to move to pass. As he releases pressure Bracher explodes into a hook sweep and Banta is on bottom. Banta is trying to get to the legs, but Bracher is showing good defense and shutting everything down. Bracher attacks a nice estima lock, but can't get the tap.

Banta is being favored by the judges now, but he seems to be more fatigued than Bracher. Banta gets to a leg and as Bracher defends, Banta comes on top. Once there Banta goes back to the body lock. Banta is slowly but surely passing with pressure. Banta passes, but 1 second later Bracher inverts and gets back to guard.

We have less than 5 min left and the judges are still favoring Banta. Banta is back to passing from halfguard and bodylocks. Bracher is able to reset to position, but he isn't able to get any offense going. Banta goes back to the bodylock pass and Bracher is showing frustration. Banta gets the bodylock pass and immediately moves to the back. Banta locks up the reverse rear triangle. Banta gets the tap. Stephan Banta wins via rear triangle.


Tiffany Butler vs Thaynara Victoria

Tiffany Butler vs Thaynara Victoria is our next match. It starts with a double guard pull, but Butler quickly comes on top. Victoria goes for and ankle lock and it looks tight. Butler goes for one of her own and we have dueling ankle locks. They switch to some other leg locks such as heel hooks and toe holds. We are less than a min in and they look like they're trying to kill each other. Victoria seems like she's had enough, but Butler won't let her extract her leg. They go for dueling leg locks again, but neither can get the tap.

Butler comes on top and Victoria gets even more aggressive with the ankle lock and almost gets an Aoki lock. Butler gets out and gives her an ankle lock in return. At the 10min mark the judges favor Bulter. Victoria is reaping the leg and is getting to good positions, but can finish. Butler gets out and gets into the saddle now. She switches to a reap and then to outside ashi with an ankle lock. For some reason neither woman is really using heel hooks. Victoria gets Butlers ankle and goes belly down and gets the tap. Thaynara Victoria wins via ankle lock.


Raphael Lovato Jr vs Richardo Evangelista


The match starts and they are coming out hard with collar ties and shoving. Ricardo is the bigger man, but he is getting pushed around by Lovato. So far it has been about 5 min of hand fighting with the occasional foot sweep attamlt. As I said that Lovato hits and arm drag to a double leg. Ricardo is working his closed guard and going for lumberjack sweeps. The judges favor Lovato at the 10min mark.

Lovato moves up to half guard and applies lots of pressure for the top. Ricardo bridges hard and ends up getting mounted briefly. He gets back to 3/4 mount, but Lovato is moving around to the back. Lovato moves to the back, to the armbar to the triangle and gets it. Lovato Jr. wins via triangle.


Keith Krikorian vs Deiogo Reis

Keith Krikorian vs Deiogo Ries is coming next. They start out wrestling and baby shark is going for some foot sweeps. Reis rushes forward and Keith tries a lat drop that fails and almost get him mounted. They get up and Reis hits a double leg. Reis jumps to a guillotine and almost passes, but Keith escapes and stands. Keith goes for an uchimata, but can't get it and Reis double legs him again. After a bit of guard work Keith stands again and Reis double legs him again. Keith goes back to standing, falls , goes for a leg lock and sweeps Reis. After a few seconds Reis wrestles up on a single and sweeps Keith. This match has a high work rate so far.

They stand again and the judges favor Reis at the 10min mark. Reis hits another double leg, but let's Keith up afterwards. Keith gets a single leg and Reis jumps to a triangle. Keith pops his head out and starts passing. Keith rotates around for a kneebar and then switches to an outside heelhook. It was a good attack, but Reis escapes. They go back to the feet and Reis hits a slide-by and Reis is on top looking to pass.

As they stand again Reis takes Keith down with a bodylock, and then drops back for a leglock that is easily defended. Keith on top now and Reis explodes up into a bodylock sweep. Reis looks to pass for a second and then backs up allowing Keith to stand. Reis hits another slide-by to sweep, but Keith doesn't go down. Reis is ahead according to the judges.

Keith goes for an uchimata and when he misses it he immediately goes into an Imanari roll and almost catches the heelhook. Reis escapes and almost catches the armbar. Keith escapes and Reis is on top. He almost catches a kneebar, but Reis escapes, stands and almost takes Keith's back. On the ground, Keith spins out and gets on top. They stand again and Reis hits a single leg and then passes with a Torreando pass.




Reis goes for a guillotine, but this allows Keith to get on top. Keith tries to spin on a leg, but this allows Reis to stand. Keith hits a single leg and then tries to get to a leg lock but can't get it. They stand again and Reis gets to the rear bodylock and gets the take down. Reis almost catches the armbar, but Keith gets out.

This was a really good match. I don't think I've ever seen a match with a pace this high. There must have been 10 takedowns and 6 submission attempts. Diogo Reis wins via decision.


Ash Williams vs Gabriel Sousa


Ash Williams and Gabriel Sousa up now. They start by wrestling and Sousa hits a big double. Ash locks a guillotine, but after a few seconds Sousa pops his head out. Ash is working from closed guard now. Sousa gets out and Ash stands. Ash goes for an arm drag and almost gets it, but Sousa defends. Back on the feet Ash goes for a flying omoplata, but Sousa defends on the ground and takes Ash's back. Sousa throws his arm over Ash's face and tries to crank him, but can't get it. After about a minute Ash wiggles out and gets to top inside Sousa's closed guard. At the 10 min mark the judges favor Sousa. Things have slowed a bit in Sousa's closed guard. Ash stands and Sousa goes for K-guard, but ash defends. Sousa wrestles up on a double leg and Ash gets elevated in an Iranian lift style position. Sousa gets on top and drops back on a heelhook that is close, but Ash slips his heel and comes on top. After a min on bottom Sousa hits an armdrag and comes on top.

Sousa working a bodylock from the top and Ash uses a butterfly hook to push him off. Sousa stands and starts passing. Sousa starts going for Toreendo passes and then moves to a north south pass. As Ash defends Sousa jumps for a back take. He has Ash's back now and is looking for the RNC. Ash defends and rolls out. Ash back on top in Sousa's closed guard. 5 min left and the judges favor Sousa.

Ash goes for a leg and Sousa counters with K-guard. Sousa goes for a heelhook, but Ash defends. Sousa goes for the other leg and locks up a kneebar. Ash is forced to tap. Gabriel Sousa wins via kneebar.


Jay Rodriguez vs Mica Galvao

Jay Rod vs Mica Galvao is next on the menu. They look to be about the same size, but Jay Rod is taller. They start out standing. They've been hand fighting for a while and feeling each other out. Mica goes for a single, but Jay Rod shuts it down immediately. Jay hits a duck under, but can't finish. He goes for a armdrag, but can't finish. Mica jumps guard, goes for a heelhook, abandones it and tries to take the back. Jay rolls to escape and Mica moves to mount. Jay kips out after a few seconds and wrestles up to a double leg. Mica stand quickly. Jay goes for a double and gets it, but mica tries a guillotine and then an armbar. Jay Rod hits the reverse hitch hiker, but Mica readjusts, then Jay does it again, then again and finally he gets out.

They are back on the feet now and the judges favor mica at the 10min mark.jay goes for double leg, but gets stood up. Mica tries to reverse him, but can't get it. Jay snaps Mica and makes him take a bad shot. He snaps him again and hits the double leg on Mica. Jay is on top of Mica and working some side to side passing. Mica hits a kiss of the dragon and comes up on top in a single leg and Jay tries to scramble. Mica is on top now and almost passes. Jay tries to wrestle up into a double leg, but Mica catches him in a guillotine. It is very close and Mica rolls him to mount. Jay's head pops out and Mica moves to a arm triangle. Jay says he's OK, but it looks nasty and Jay has been stuck for about 2 min. Jay gets his arm out, so he isn't in danger, but he is still stuck in mount. Mica cross faces him which allows Jay to hit the kipping escape. They come back to the feet. Jay goes for a double, but can't quite get it. 2 min left and Mica looks tired, but still has something left in the tank. Mica jumps to guard. Jay Rod almost passes, but Mica defends. Mica stands up into an over over and hits a sasae tsuikomi ashi. They stand again and Mica hits a huge suplex. Jay trying to turn it up but they isn't time. Jay goes for a takedown and Mica reverses him to get on top as time runs out. Mica Galvao wins via decision.


PJ Barch vs Andrew Tackett

PJ Barch vs Andrew Tackett is up next. They come up and stand. Tackett hits a double and he's on top now. PJ spins and reverses Tackett. Tackett goes for the leg and PJ escapes and Tackett comes up on a bodylock. They attempt to throw each other and fall awkwardly, but Tackett gets to the back. They roll and PJ goes to turtle with Tackett on top with a hook in. PJ build himself up and shakes of Tackett. PJ is on top looking to pass. Tackett stands and they are back to wrestling. At the 10 min mark the judges are favoring Tackett. PJ is starting to look tired and Tackett looks as fresh as a daisy. Tackett goes for another shot and PJ reverses with a slick uchimata. The reset them on the feet and the same sequence happens again and they go out of bounds. PJ gets a single leg and Tackett twists out. Tackett goes for another double leg and it looks like he gets it for a second, but PJ scrambles to top. Tackett goes for an outside heelhook, but PJ escapes. They are standing again. Tackett gets to the rear bodylock, PJ tries to hit a switch and Tackett catches him in a crusifix, but after a few seconds PJ spins out. From standing PJ gets double underhook and throws Tackett down with a hip thrown. PJ is working from top now and tries a high step pass, but Tackett stands Tackett goes for another double leg, PJ tries to reverse with an uchimata and Tackett keeps scrambling until they go out of bounds. The reset standing and Tackett shoots and gets stuffed. Tackett shoots, PJ scrambles and almost takes Tackett's back, Tackett escapes and gets on top. PJ inverts for a kneebar and almost gets it, but Tackett escapes. PJ looks exhausted and Tackett is slowing too. PJ sits to guard and Tackett dives on him. PJ goes for a leg, but Tackett defends and they eventually stand up. PJ hits a nice double leg, but Tackett stands back up and then Tackett goes for his own double. After some scrambles Tackett gets on top. Tackett looking to pass with a few seconds left. Time runs out. Andrew Tackett wins by decision.


Elizabeth Clay vs Brianna Ste-Marie


Liz sits and starts working DLR. Liz tries to move to Kguard and Bru is trying to stop the leg from coming over. Liz switches and tries to reap, but Bri is sitting heavy. Liz moves to 50/50 and has Bri on her butt. Bri is trying to escape, but Liz has her tangles up. Bri escapes and come back on top and Liz moves to the false reap. Bri smashes her and goes into halfguard. Liz starts using the knee shield to make distance. Liz tries to go for a leglock, but puts herself into a leg drag. Liz looking to prevent the pass, but Bri is content to inch forward as she gets the underhook. It's an arm triangle leg entanglement battle. Liz gets her leg, but then Bri's arm triangle starts coming on. Liz abandoned the leg and rolls to turtle. Bri has one hook in and Liz is defending her neck. Liz wiggles back to half guard. Liz goes for a kiss of the dragon sweep and gets it. Liz is on top now and looking to pass half guard.

Bri looks for a choi bar, but can't get any purchase. Bri goes for it again, but it allows Liz to get chest to chest from half guard. Judges favored Liz the first period and Clay the second. Clay is smashing her now from half guard. Liz is using a guillotine grip on the head and pressuring in for the pass with 3 min left. Bri trying to wrestle up, but she can't get it and Liz is still working the guillotine grip. Liz cranking now and as Bri reacts Liz tries to move to mount. Bri stops her though. Bri turtles and Liz tries to lock in a darce. Liz can't get it and moves back to the guillotine, but there is 20sec left. Bri stands but Liz still has the front headlock. Time runs out. Liz Clay wins via decision and is the new 145lbs champion.


Diogo Reis vs Gabriel Sousa


Diogo Reis vs Gabriel Sousa up next for the 145lbs title. Reis is ranked number and Sousa is ranked 2. Reis sits and tried to wrestle up with a bodylock. Reis almost gets him down, but Sousa stands back up and Reis gets to a rear bodylock. Sousa rolls and lands on top. Reis tries to play butterfly guatf, but Sousa puts the pressure on. Sousa looks hungry for the pass. They are arguing about the restart and Reis gets to halfguard when the action resumes. Sousa is relentless with his pressure. Reis defends and gets to closed guard. Reis goes to K-guard and sweeps to the top. Sousa looking for a leg entnlw and almost kneebars Reis. Reis comes up and gets a single. Reis back on top in Sousa's closed guard. Reis stands and goes for a north south pass that he hits, but a few seconds later Sousa escapes. The judges are favoring Reis right now, but it is a close match so far. Reis trying to pass from half and Sousa defending with his kneeshield. Reis ups the passing pressure and gets the pass, but can't hold side control. Sousa stands and Reis has the rear bodylock. Reis is trying to break the quadpod now but can't get it. Sousa rolls to get away and ends in the same position. Sousa rolls for a leg lock and can't get that either. Sousa on bottom and Reis passes his guard for a second but Sousa recovers. Reis in 3/4 mount now. Reis floats over Sousa guard to side control. Sousa tries to stand and Reis takes his back. Sousa spins and ends up on top on closed guard. Sousa passes and Reis throws him off, but then Sousa goes to a kimura trap and then an armbar. Reis barely escapes. Sousa turns up the passing pressure and almost takes Reis back. Reis scrambles to the top and is looking to pass half guard.

Sousa starts to work from open guard, but Reis is jumping back and forth over his guard. As Reis tries to pass Sousa locks up a kimura as Reis moves to his back. Sousa let's go of the kimura and Reis has one hook in. Sousa spins out and comes to his feet. Reis shoots for a double and gets stopped when Sousa jumps for a flying triangle. Reis ducks and Sousa falls to the floor. They're on their feet with 30 sec left. Sousa shoots, but Reis stops him and moves to the rear bodylock. 10 sec left and this should go to Reis. Diogo Reis wins via decision and becomes the 145lbs champion.


Raphaela Guedes vs Nathiely de Jesus

Raphaela Gedes and Nathiely de Jesus up now. After 1 wrestling exchange De Jesus sits. Gedes comes in to pass and gets hit in the face and the action stops. They resume and Geudes is looking to pass. De Jesus is using her long legs to frustrate Geudes. Geudes gets hit in the face again and they stop. They don't seem to be intentional, but she is checking her eye. That match starts again. De Jesus is working her closed guard. She starts working a reverse kimura, but Geudes gets her arm out. De Jesus opens her guard and tries to get something going. Gedes drops back for an ankle lock, but doesn't have anything. De Jesus tries to wrestle up, but Geudes pushes her back down. At the 10 min mark the judges favor De Jesus. Guedes is trying to pass, but gets swept instead. De Jesus gets in top and tries to get the back, she tries to throw her hooks in, but falls off the top and Guedes is back on top.

Gueges pushes the passing for a sec, but can't get anything. De Jesus gets a sweep and comes up. Guedes scrambles to get away, but instead De Jesus gets her in a rear bodylock. Guedes gets dragged to the ground and De Jesus looks to break the turtle. Guedes rolls out and De Jesus is on top now as it is announced the judges favor De Jesus. Guedes goes for a halfguard sweep and gets it. De Jesus goes for a sweep and Guedes falls back for an ankle lock. Guedes comes back up and gets on top. After a while Guedes turns up the pressure and Guedes almost gets the back. De Jesus grabs a leg and gets on top with a front headlock. She has Guedes stuck with 30 sec left De Jesus tries to get to the back and tries to lock on the RNC at the last second. Nathiely De Jesus wins via decision and becomes the HW champion.

PJ Barch vs Mica Galvao

PJ replaced Andrew Tackett due to injury, so he will face Mica Galvao. They start standing and Mica almost hits a single, PJ stumbles back and Mica rushes forward and PJ hits a duck under. As they scramble PJ hits his head and it looks like PJ might have a concussion. PJ wants to continue and as they start again PJ gets an underhook and Mica hits a flying armbar. Beautiful submission. Mica Galvao wins via armbar and is the new 170lb champion.


Gordon Ryan vs Patrick Gaudio

Gordon comes out with a wooden chest and hopefully it is related to his submission. They start standing up and they are going hard with collar ties. Gaudio picks up a single leg, but he can't finish. Gaudio goes for a single and Ryan defends and hits an armdrag to a single leg. Ryan is on top in half guard. Ryan has Gaudio flattened out and is attempting to improve his grips and gas Gaudio. Ryan goes to 3/4 and Gaudio inverts to get out. Gaudio is in deep half now. Gordon passes to mount. After a while Gaudo gets back to 3/4 mount. Ryan gets out and starts riding his legs. Gaudio escapes back to guard after a while. Ryan passes again to mount. Ryan moves up the body and Gaudio turn to his side, but can't escape.

Gaudio gets back to guard and Ryan moves to half and then passes. Ryan locks up a kimura, but let's it go. Gaudio again gets to 3/4 mount and Ryan rides his legs again. Ryan passes again and goes back to smashing. He starts moving to and arm triangle and then a gift wrap to the back. Now Ryan moves to an armbar and gets a tap with the lat juiji. Gordon Ryan wins via Armbar and retains the HW championship.
