What We Learned from Fightpass Invitational 6

Let's cut to the chase, this event was great. There were amazing match ups, back and forth action and submissions. I think this might be the best event of 2024, but of course it is still only March. We'll see how things go, but I'll just say this was an event worth watching. Let's get into what happened.

How People Won

You see that big slice of red and little slice of blue and orange. That is what we like to see at the grappling conjecture. Lots of submissions and only 1 point victory and 1 decision. In total we saw 6 chokes and 2 leglocks. For some reason there were no arm attacks, but sometimes  that happens. I'm just happy that we got an event with a 80% submission rate. I don't think that can be beaten. Especially when you consider that the matches that ended without a finish were also very good.

Stats

Let's take a look at the specific submissions here. We got 4 rear naked chokes, 2 arm triangles and 2 inside heelhooks. The RNC was attempted the most, but that was mostly due to people messing it up the first time they got the back and then trying again until they got it. There were a lot of outside heelhook attempts as well, but none were able to finish a match. Jay Rod had a buggy choke that looked pretty close, but Jonatha Alves didn't want to go out like that. All in all, I was happy with the variety and the amount of submissions. This was a good card.

The mat return came out on top here. We also got some bodylock takedowns, single legs and a great ura nage/back suplex. The big one however is the de ashi barai. Pedro Marinho hit this over and over again. Honestly it should have been 3-5 takedowns from it, but Pedro just kind of stood there after hitting them. I think Mason was trying to tire him out and not waste every, but I don't think I could have stood there and let him foot sweep me like that over and over again. Mason got him in the end, but that might have been one of the best foot sweep performances in history. There were at least 2 ippons.

Most of the sweeps here were wrestle ups. Nicky Rod had a good one, but I think Ronaldo Junior really stole the show with this. He used this twice on Kody Steele and showed how effective this can be if you don't want to wrestle someone on the feet. Nicky Rod also had a nice wrestle up against Roberto Jimenz.

Now when it comes to passes the toreando was king at this event. The half guard pass was the most attempted, but there was only 1 completion. We saw a good variety of passes and the 2 high step passes Nicky Rod attempted looked great, but Roberto was able to recover at the last minute. Overall I thought the passing looked good at this event and passing and sweeping seemed about event. There were 8 passes and 9 sweeps.

The back was the place to finish from at FPI 6. However we also got a mount and 50/50 finish. Craig didn't quite have a perfect 50/50 entanglement, but it was close enough. I'm just happy we saw so many finishes as well as good solid positional BJJ. We saw people working positions and using that to hit their subs. Just good old jui jitsu basics.

The action here was amazing. We got 9.35 attacks per 5 min and 2.81 completed techniques. This is the highest I've ever recorded. There was a ton of action, movement and technique. The Good technique ratio was 0.3 which I think is respectable and shows people weren't just going for BS to look active. Everyone was going hard, trying to score and most importantly, putting on a show. This event had pretty much everything you can ask for in a grappling event. They weren't as agressive with the stalling this time around, but they didn't really need it. I hope they are slightly more agressive with them in the future, but with action like this and a 80% submission rate for the event, I can't complain. The only complaint I have now is, "Why haven't you announced the next one yet?"

Overall

This was a great event and I'd even go as far as saying it is a must watch. As I'm writng this and thinking back on the matches, every single match had something I liked in it. We saw nice guard work in some. Quick submissions in others. Aggressive wrestling and throws in others, etc. Not only was it fun to watch, but I think I'll watch it again just to try to learn some of those moves. The match ups were all fairly even and the athletes themselves gave 100%. Dana White was there watching and if this event doesn't get him to invest more into pro grappling nothing will. This is the type of event that will put more eyes on the sport and increase competitors; profiles. Thank you fight pass for putting on a great event.

You can watch the first few matches here.
