Stats

Due to time constraints I can't break this down much, but I have the stats for you. These are for all of the matches during day 1.

Thoughts

One of the strangest things during this first day was the lack of output by the first round draft picks. The first 4 people picked were PJ Barch, Andy Varela, Renato Canuto and Elijah Carlton. Of those 4 only Andy has scored points. Most teams spent more than half of their budget to draft these people, but was it worth it. I guess we will see as the season goes on.

I think the biggest standout was Daniel Sathler. Daniel isn't a big name, but he is coming off of some momentum after his win over Max Hansen on WNO. He was very exciting today, with a flying armbar in one match and a berimbolo from the top to a RNC in less than a minute. He made a statement today despite the fact that he was DQ'd in his final match.

Davis Asare also look really good, scoring 2 subs. He looked skilled in all positions and aggressive. He is almost assuredly going to be in the final tournament.

David Evers surprised me with his slick submissions. He isn't a big name, but he put up big numbers today. He is a former winner and showed that he has what it takes to go far in this tournament.

The big names will need to step up tomorrow and start getting some subs. Nobody besides Andy Varela has been able to justify the price they went for in the draft. Many of them will need to step on the gas these next few days to secure their spot in the final. I'm looking forward to seeing how the coaches help the competitors adjust their strategy tomorrow and the following days.

Overall

I thought it was a good first day, but of course there could have been more action. I think some people aren't used to the format and don't realize it is a waste of time to play things like an IBJJF tournament. The athletes that let it all hang out scored, so let's see how the player adjust. Another adjustment to look forward to is the amount of stalling calls. Brandon Mccaghren said he's going hard on day 2 and I'm hoping it brings the action score up. Overall I thought the show was really good and I can't wait for tomorrow. I'll be doing stats and a breakdown for that too, so stay tuned. And be sure to go to the PGF youtube channel and check out the matches yourself(under the live tab).
