What We Learned from Polaris 28 & Musumeci vs Sousa

Polaris just had another even, but there was a bit of bad luck with the main event. This event was supposed to be headlined by Owen Livesey and Yoel Romero, however at the last min Yoel's flight was canceled. Luckily on short notice they found a replacement. We got 6 matches on the main card and some pretty good prelim matches as well. Let's take a look at who won.

Results

Mikey Musumeci def Gabriel Sousa via Calf slicer

Ellias Younger def Sam Quinn via RNC

Jed Hue def Steven Ray via dec

Santeri Lilius def Ben Bennet via dec

Helena Crevar def Jessica Torttila via dec

Matheuz Szczecinski def Levi Jones-Leery via dec

Owen Livesy def Baki Chamsoudinov via dec

How People Won

71% of the matches went to decision which IMO isn't a good stat. There were 2 subs here and one was from he Mikey Musumeci match. Polaris had some good action, but not much in the way of submissions, which was surprising considering who was on there. I guess they can't all be bangers, but unfortunately the only sub was during the first match, which made the event a bit anti-climactic.

Stats

Unfortunately we didn't get many subs. Mikey's match ended in a calf slicer, which is a really rare sub. However at Polaris we only got 1 sub during the main card. We got a RNC from the back, but nothing else was able to be finished here. Overall we saw a 4% submission rate, which isn't really impressive.

Here we got 1 double leg and and uchimata. I think most people were hoping for some takedown fireworks from Owen Livesey and Yoel Romero, but unfortunately that match fell through.  We got a number of attempts, but not too many takedowns.

Here we got 2 sub sweeps, an armdrag, a bodylock sweep and a roll over sweep. Sweeps were actually fairly effective here and were more effective than takedowns and submissions at these 2 events.

The halfguard pass was king here with 3 attempts and 3 passes. We also got 2 bodylock passes and 2 kneeslices. It seems like pressure passes were doing most of the work here.

Here we got one finish from the back and the other was almost on the back(the calf slicer). The other positions didn't yeild any subs, but side control and the mount were used quite a bit.

Although there weren't many subs, there was a lot of action. We got a good number of sub attempts, but it seemed like most people couldn't finish. The action in these matches wasn't bad and I don't think there was really any stalling. The only problem during this event was the lack of finishes. I guess they can't all have great finishes.

Overall

I enjoyed the matches and the updated rules at Polaris helped a bit I think. It is a shame that the main event was changed, but what happened was unpredictable. The Mikey Musumeci vs Gabriel Sousa match lived up to the hype. Not only did it have amazing technique and a finish, but Mikey also went on that rant afterwards that got everyone talking. Personally I like the calm respectful Mikey, more than the angry cursing Mikey, but perhaps this drew more eyes to the match. Next up for Polaris will be a gi tournament that I won't be covering since I only do nogi here. However I will be watching. Make sure to check again next week for coverage of another big event.
