What We Learned from WNO 24

WNO 24 was a bit unexpected. Gordon was added at the last minute which ended up being the main event, however overall the matches were really solid. We got really nice action in almost all the matches and we got a lot of submissions as well. This might be the last WNO before ADCC/CJI and I think this showed us a few potential matches ups that we might not get there. Anyway, lets check out the results.

How People Won

You know I'm excited anytime we get as many submissions as decisions. This is especially notable considering how many high level competitors were on here. There weren't many easy matches, but people were still able to get it done. Neck subs came out on top, followed by arm and leg submissions, which each were hit once. I should note that WNO doesn't have points, so only decision victories were available for this event.

Stats

The rear naked choke came out in full force here. 4 finishes came from it, showing it is still the king of submissions. The outside heelhook and the choi bar were both hit once each as well. Both of these subs have been seeing more use in the last 2 years and they are definitely worth learning if you haven't already.

There were a variety of takedowns here. We got a single, a double, a mat return, an ouchi gari and even a kani basami. This is just an example of the trend of using a diverse set of takedowns instead of just focusing on one or 2. I should note that the 4 armdrags were from Ana Rodriguez who just kept spamming them without much set up.

The sub sweep and bodylock wrestle up were at the top for this event. The sub sweep has proven to be one of the best ways to sweep over the next few years. We're seeing more and more people attempting subs and using them to sweep when they fail.

There were also a number of wrestle ups as well. Of course we got some traditional sweeps too. Overall, you could see a good mix of techniques at this event.

The half guard pass won here, mostly due to Gordon Ryan. The kneeslice, bodylock and sub pass came next with 2 each. Overall there was quite a lot of passing with a 28% completion rate, which is pretty good.

The back came out on top here as always. The mount and side control were used quite a bit, but nobody could finish from there. This seems to be a bit of a trend and hopefully in the future, people will be able to convert these positions into finishes.

There was a lot of action at this event which made things fun to watch. We got an action score of 7.21, which is pretty good.

I'm going to be redoing these scores as I've found they aren't as accurate as I'd like. I'm going to rename the action score, the attempts score and make the activity score the new action score. I'll also be doing some other tweaks just to make a more accurate measure of what is happening in the matches. I was going to wait until the end of the year, but I think it is best to start this before ADCC/ CJI, so I can do an accurate comparison between the 2. I'll explain fully in the next post.

Mikey Award

I'm going to introduce the Mikey award here, for the most one sided match that ends in a submission. There were some good candidates here, such as Gordon vs Josh Saunders and Jozef Chen vs Elijah Dorsey, but the events winner is Victor Hugo. He dominated Javier and finished with a RNC. Congrats to Victor and I hope you get that match with Shane Gillis that you wanted.

Overall

This is one of the best events in a while. It had action, subs, takedowns, sweeps, etc. Not only was it fun, but there was also a lot of interesting stuff to study. Not only was there star power, but also good match ups. This is definitely worth watching, so check it out if you haven't.
