What We Learned From IBJJF Nogi Worlds 2024

IBJJF Nogi Worlds 2024 has wrapped up and we have a lot of new champions. Some of the matches were really good and others not so good, but I think the IBJJF is moving in the right direction. This was an ADCC year and I think many of the people decided to opt out since they'd already done that tournament. One thing to note about the stats for this is, due to the sheer number of matches I had to limit my stats to only the finals matches. You can check out some of the highlights below and after that, let's look at the results.

How People Won

Here we can see a 39% submission rate, which is honestly pretty good. You could tell there were people going for submissions out there and we always like to see that. The rest of the matches were won by points except 2. These two were DQs and it wasn't due to an illegal move. They were both because of stalling, which is terrible considering these were the finals of a world championship. However on the bright side the IBJJF did actually act and sent a message they they aren't allowing this anymore. I commend them on that.

As I said above, these stats are only from the finals matches of the event and aren't the full stats, due to time constraints.

Stats

Overall

I don't know if this was as good as last year, but on ADCC years, nogi worlds tends to have less high level competitors. Hopefully this will help some of the lesser known athletes break into the pro scene. I think there was a lot of good stuff at this event and some cool highlights. Although I hate to see stalling, I'm happy the the IBJJF is sending a message to competitors that they won't be allowing stalling anymore and they aren't afraid to DQ people, even in the finals. Some people don't like it, but IMO this is what the sport needs. If a match is unwatchable due to stalling it needs to end, so they can move on to the next one.

I think they are now using a point system to qualify for nogi worlds, but perhaps they should make an exception for some pros. It is a shame more people aren't doing worlds, but when they not only have to pay, but do other tournaments just to qualify, I understand. I think the IBJJF should do more to attract these people, so Nogi worlds becomes an A level tournament that people want to participate in. I think the IBJJF is making strides in the right direction and I hope they don't rest on their laurals just yet.

The end of the year is almost here, so I'll start doing my yearly breakdown soon with stats and trends, so check back often, so you don't miss it.
