The UFC FightPass Invitational is back and the line up looks great. They have a good mix of stars and up and coming athletes. The match making looks good, but that doesn't always make for a good event. Let's look at the results and see how things turned out.
Results
Carlos Henrique def Victor Delibero via Armbar
Alex Enriquez def Julia Alves via RNC
Achilles Rocha def Nathan Haddad via dec
Helena Crevar def Maggie Grindatti Lira via Calf Slicer
Cassia Moura def Sarah Galvao via points
Andy Murasaki def Daniel Sathler via Inside Heelhook
Ronaldo Junior def Felipe Costa via points
Brianna Ste-Marie def Elizabeth Clay via Von Flue choke
60% of the matches ended in submission and I don't think you can ask for more than that. We got the normal distribution of submissions with chokes coming in at #1, leg locks at #2 and arm attacks at #3. I was happy to see so many finishes and people not playing the points game. Although I think things aren't perfect, I think the FPI format is working well.
Results
Here we have 15% of the attempts ending in an actual submission. The RNC was king here as always, but outside of that we got 4 other submissions. The inside heelhook and armbar are fairly common, but the calf slicer is a bit of a rare sub. I should also mention that the arm triangle here was actually a Von Flue chokes, which is a bit rare in grappling.
Here we had a 29% success rate for takedowns. This was mostly due to the single leg, but we also got 2 mat returns and 2 duck unders. We even got a harai goshi, which is rarely seen.
We had a 29% sweep rate and the sub sweep and roll over sweep were at the top of the list here.
We had a 21% pass rate and the 3 top passes were the Torreando the bodylock and the smash pass.
The back was the top position as always, but we also got a mount submission and one for the saddle position as well.
I've added this chart here to show how this show stacked up against the other shows this year and the average from last year. As you can see 2025 is starting out strong with some really outstanding events. The watchability and action scores are very high, so I'd suggest watching this and the other 2 events if you haven't already. To be honest, they are all worth a rewatch too.
This event was great and really showed that shows can live up to the hype. We got a lot of action, many subs and some surprises as well. Luckily there aren't any matches I'd say were bad. The was good action in all of them and there was little to no stalling. I'm hoping this continues throughout the year. So far we have had 3 big grappling events and all of them have been good. This is one of the few events where all the matches were good. There were some that were better than the others, but there wasn't a match that was terrible or boring and there wasn't really any stalling. This is the type of event I love to watch and I'm glad to see the organizers have been thinking about how to create a better product and the athletes are going out to put on a show. For the next show they showed Mikey Musumeci, Ffion Davies, William Tackett and Mason Fowler competing, so I'm excited for the next FPI show and hope it can live up to the hype like this one did.
Year to Date Submissions
It is still early in the year, but I thought I'd post this, so we can see how things are going.
