What We Learned From BJJ Star 15

BJJ Stars put together a stellar card with some big names. They usually focus on gi matches, but here they did a nogi GP. There were some gi superfight matches in there as well and I'll include those in the result down below, but keep in mind they aren't included in the stats. Now let's take a look at who won.

Mica Galvao def Jon Blank via points

Roberto Jimminez def Izaak Michell via dec

Elijah Dorsey def Raphael Paganini via points

Oliver Taza def Jonnatas Gracie via dec

Leonardo Ferreria def Hygor Brito via advantage (gi match)

Meyram Maquine def Diogo "Baby Shark" Ries via points (gi match)

How People Won

This disappointing thing here is that we only got 1 sub. There is more to grappling than submissions, but honestly I can't help, but feel let down. Many of the people on the card are known for their submissions and we only got 1. I guess you could count 1 more if we count the gi matches as well, but honestly I was hoping for more out of an event with a line up this good. I guess sometimes this happens though.

Stats

There was not only a surprising lack of submissions, but also submission attempts. Either people couldn't get into position to try subs or were just too concerned with trying to score points. Whatever the reason, this wasn't the event to watch when it came to submissions. We had 15 attempts and 1 submission for a 6% submission rate.

We had 2 takedowns at this event. It wasn't because there was a lack of attempts, but in general people were defending things pretty well and popping back up quickly. We got to see a single leg and a ura nage(suplex), but besides that we just got failed attempts. There were 36 attemps and 2 takedowns for a 5% takedown rate.

We got 1 sweep and a surprisingly low amount of sweep attempts. We had 8 attempts and just 1 half guard sweep for an 11% sweep rate.

We had 3 passes at this event. A half guard pass, a knee slice and a smash pass. There were 28 attempts and that comes to a total of a 10% pass rate.

The only sub from this event was from the guard, but we got a good amount of side control and back control though.

Here we have the action scores for this event. Unfortunately this has the lowest watchability score of any event this year. It is also lower than last years average. The action score was a bit better, but overall even that was a bit low. You can see a comparison between this event and others down below.

Overall

This was a decent event and I think BJJ Stars did what they could to make things a great event, but sometimes things just don't come together. It wasn't even the athletes not trying, being lazy or too conservative. For most of the matches it seemed like people couldn't get their games going, which is a shame. One thing I did have a problem with was the rules. I was under the impression that it was ADCC rules, but not only were the times shorter, but there were some rule changes I didn't understand. They seemingly got rid of overtime, which I didn't know about and I guess they allowed guard pulling. I was confused a few times when things happened, so in the future it might better to just make their own rules instead of using these heavily modified ADCC rules and having people guess what is happening. I'm glad BJJ Stars is doing more nogi and I hope they continue, so I can cover them more in the future. They had the right idea even if it didn't end up exactly how people would have wanted.

Congrats to Mica and I think this is a great start to the year for him. Even though he wasn't as dominant as usual, he had a solid performance and a submission of the year contender in his finals armbar. Hopefully we see him back to the mats again soon.

Year To Date

Here are the subs for the year. Not much has changed since last time, but I thought I'd update it since I made a mistake with it last time. This one should be accurate.
