What We Learned From BJJ Stars 16

BJJ Stars is back with its 16th edition. This time we have another Grand Prix, but this time it is an absolute division. There was a 8 man nogi division with athletes from all over competing for the grand prize. There were also a number of gi matches and although we don't cover those here at The Grappling Conjecture, I'm sure many of you will appreciate those as well. You can find the brackets and results down below.

How People Won

A third of the matches end in submission and at this event they were all chokes.  The rest of the matches were split evenly between points and decision victories. This certainly isn't the worst event of all time, but a 33.3% finish rate isn't that impressive. Unfortunately this often happens when you do events in the heavier weight classes. The 2 finishes we did get were good though and worth watching.

Stats

Overall

I'm happy to see BJJ Stars doing more nogi events. I think there is a lot of talent in Brazil and many of the don't get a chance to display their skills on pro events. BJJ Stars is helping them get the exposure they need to start booking other big shows and gather fans outside of Brazil. I appreciate them bringing in talent from the US as well too. I think this is mutually beneficial and I hope they continue in the future.

I'm hoping they're looking at who is producing the best matches and they start using those people more and excluding those who are stinking up the mats. At this event there wasn't anyone who was terrible, but I do think there is room for improvement. Overall I think they are moving in the correct direction and I hope they continue with these nogi matches and Grand Prix.

All be doing the Year to Date stats next week after the UFC BJJ 2 event, so check back after that event for an update.
