What We Learned From BJJStars 17

BJJstars is back with another event and another nogi GP. They've really done a good job with these this year and have been getting some really good talent. Unfortunately something happened and Ethan Crelenstin and Josh Cisneros weren't there, but the roster was still very solid in my opinion. The changes to the roster didn't seem to effect the action and I think this was the best GP they've had yet.
BjjStars 17 featured gi and nogi matches, but as you know here at the Grappling Conjecture, we only cover nogi BJJ. The matches were good though, so if you are a fan of gi BJJ check those matches out as well.

How People Won

Here we got a 42.9% submission rate here. Most of the subs were chokes and we had one armlock. There were no leglocks, but that isn't unexpected due to the roster here. 57.1% of the matches ended in decision.

Stats

Overall

BJJstars often gets overlooked due to it coming on at strange times and it doesn't quite have the promotion it should outside of Brazil. However they're putting on solid shows and getting better each time. I've enjoyed these GPs and I hope they continue in the future.

They were better with the stalling calls this time and I think that helped keep the action moving. They also are experimenting with the rules to make things more viewer friendly, which is a good thing.

It was heart breaking to see Meyram Alves lose again in the finals. He is such an exciting competitor and he really deserves to win one of these after losing 3. That said I was happy to see Ruan Alvarenga back in action and I think this is the biggest won of his career. I'm hoping this will be the start of a long run where he is competing regularly. I'd like to see both of them on future shows and also hopefully doing big shows in the US as well.
