What We Learned From Polaris 33 Asia vs South America Squads

Polaris is back with another teams event. This time we have Asia and Oceania vs South America. For those that aren't familiar the Polaris events are similar to Quintet in that they are teams events where different weightclasses can go against each other and the winner stays on. The difference is that Polaris gives points for decision wins and the matches are based on a time limit instead of the number of matches. This event will determine who will challenge team Europe at the end of the year for the team championship.

On top of that we also have a championship match between Owen Livesey and Tommy Langaker. We have some good names and an exciting format, so let's see who competed and the results.

How People Won

Here we got a third of the matches ending in submission, which I think it fairly decent. The rest of the matches ended in decisions. Chokes and leglocks tied for first place. Armlocks came in second, which is the usual pattern. I think this format can make the decisions interesting as well, so even when there aren't a ton of subs things aren't boring.

Stats

Overall

This was a great event overall. I enjoyed the matches and the format. I think Kenta Iwamoto was the MVP here and I'm happy to see him getting used on more shows. Gabriel Sousa also looked good after having a rough time in his matches recently. I'm looking forward to the championship where Team Europe will be going against Team Asia Oceania.

As you can see this was one of the most watchable events of the year, so check it out if you haven't already. My favorite match was either Kenta Iwamoto vs Gabriel Sousa or Charles Negromonte vs Igor Tanabe. I was also happy to see that Tommy vs Owen was a good match that ended in a submission. This has been a great month for grappling and there are more good events coming soon, so stay tuned for my coverage of those as well.
