What We Learned From Polaris 34

Polaris came back with its last event of the year and the finale of its Squads series. The whole year has been building up to this championship between Team Europe and Team Asia Oceania. Polaris took a gamble basing their shows around this teams format instead of just doing superfights like most other organizations. In my opinion it paid off as these were great events that were all entertaining. This finale was no exception and was a great way to end the year. We also got 2 women's superfights for the Polaris titles. Polaris changed up their rules and format this year and I think it worked out for the better, but let's take a look at the teams and results below.

How People Won

Here you can see that 56.7% of the matches ended in submission, which is amazing. Not only that, but the submissions we got were all exciting and varied. The majority of finishes were leglocks, but surprisingly anklelocks were the number 1 finisher. I don't know if we will ever see another event where anklelocks and Z-locks finish more people than RNCs and heelhooks.

There really was a wide variety of submissions and I think that is what made the event so interesting and fun. Take a look below for more info on what submissions people were working.

Overall

This event was amazing. I really enjoyed it from start to finish. This team format was fun and easy to watch. We also got a lot of submissions and I was happy to see some less common names competing. In previous years it seemed like we only saw the same names over and over again, but this year it seems like some new stars are breaking out. Many of the talented grapplers from Europe and Australia didn't have the chance to show their skills before, but now they are showing what they can do and putting on a good show.

Lucas Kannard has been on fire recently and I hope he gets used more. Mateusz Szczecinski is also someone that needs to compete on big cards more often. I believe he now has the 2 fastest subs in Polaris history and is always exciting. Taylor Pearman also had a great performance and I'd like to see him on more cards. This might have capped off a breakout year for Helena Crevar as well. She's been looking unstoppable recently and gets better and better each time I see her.

I don't know if Polaris will do this again next year, but even if they don't, I hope they bring back this Squads format again soon. I think they have something great here and I think their gamble paid off.
