What We Learned from IBJJ Nogi Worlds 2025

IBJJF Nogi Worlds just finished and I think this was the last big event for 2025. We crowned a lot of new champions and I'm a bit surprised with some of the results. Perhaps this is a year where things get shaken up and new up and coming athletes breakout.

One thing I was happy about was the improvements in action this year. IBJJF events have been really bad in the past when it comes to action and watchability, but this event was a pleasant surprise. There was a good amount of action and finishes.

How People Won

Before we start I'll say that these stats are based on the finals matches from each division and unfortunately there was one match I couldn't find. Anyway, in 2025 we had 61.1% of the matches end in submission. This is a great number for any event, but for the finals of an IBJJF event, these numbers are amazing. Strangely there were no arm submissions. The majority of the subs were chokes and that was followed closely by leg attacks. These are the types of stats I like to see and I'm happy to see this type of positive change at IBJJF events.

Stats

Overall

This was a good event and better than Nogi Worlds in the past. There were a lot of shake ups in the divisions and new faces. The submission rate also seemed to up compared to previous years, although I didn't check the stats, so I don't know if that is really true. The competitors were looking for subs and for the most part looked hungry. The refs were better compared to previous years as well, but I still think they could have done more keep the action moving. Many of the matches were great, but there were some that dragged on for too long or only started to get moving after 7 min and 3 penalties for both athletes. However I will say they are moving in the right direction and are getting better each year.

Liz Clay beat Gabi Pessanha has to be one of the biggest upsets of all time and I certainly didn't see it coming. Liz had been looking a bit inconsistent recently, but perhaps her switch to 6 blades helped her fill in those gaps and get back to her winning ways. Pawel Jaworski came out of nowhere this year and this Nogi world championship just put a cap on his year. He has now established himself as a top level force in the nogi world. Tarik Hopstock finally got to the gold and made his mark on the sport. For a long time he was known as the person that popularized the Tarikaplata, but now he can say he is a world champion as well. Nico Maglicic also looked amazing and solidified himself as the number 1 HW out of Australia.

This was a very solid event and although I might have some gripes, this was a good event. The IBJJF has been improving little by little and it really paid off here. There were some great matches and exposed people to some names that they might not have heard of before.

Year To Date

Instead of giving the stats for this I'll just include them in the end of the year wrap up. Don't worry, because that will be coming soon.
