What We Learned From WNO 32

WNO is back and this time they did 2 tournaments. We got a youth tournament and a lightweight tournament. We also had some superfights mixed in. The light weight tournament was setup to find out who would get the lightweight belt now that Deigo "Pato" Oliveira has relinquished it. We had  4 top lightweights duking it out to see who will come out on top. I was happy to see WNO back and I hope they increase their event frequency to keep up with UFC BJJ.

How People Won

At this event we had a 38.5% submission rate which is decent. Nothing amazing, but not disappointing either. Chokes and leglocks led the charge, followed by a single armlock. I felt like a lot of people were going for subs which made the matches exciting even if they didn't all result in finishes. I also thought James Ortiz should have gotten the submission over JP Tran for his Woj lock, but I guess Tran didn't want to tap. The sound it made was disgusting.

Stats

Overall

To be honest I'd prefer to see more big names, however I understand WNO needs to build new stars. They no longer have Gordon Ryan, Craig Jones, Mikey Musumeci, the Ruotolos, etc. They need to spend some time building up the newer talent which is understandable. I did actually prefer a tournament to the normal prelims we usually get. Hopefully some of these up and coming athletes turn into the next big grappling stars because we need some right now.

I think this was a pretty good event overall. Despite the fact that there weren't a lot of big names, the actual action was good and there weren't any really boring matches. Hopefully they keep building up the winners and they become the headliners we want to see in the future. I also hope they continue with these mini tournaments. I felt like they were long enough to build interest and a storyline, but not so long that I got bored. I can't wait to see what's next.
