What We Learned From UFC BJJ 8

UFC BJJ is back with it's 8th installment. Here we get 2 title matches with Mikey Musumeci defending his belt with a somewhat lackluster match against Kevin Danzler and Cassia Moura with her first title defense against late replacement Sabrina Gondim. We also got some interesting matches from William Tackett, Jett Thomson and the debut of the Crelinstein brothers. Think this was a step up as far as names go compared to the last event and I was happy with some of the new names they brought in. Anyway, let's take a look at the results.

 Results

Thomas David vs Azamat Bakytov ended in a draw

Liam Crelinstein def Max Livingston via RNC

Keith Krakorian def Landon Elmore via dec

Jett Thomson def Derek Rayfield via Aoki lock

Ethan Crelinstein def Danilo Moreira via RNC

William Tackett def Maunel Ribimar via Outside heelhook

Cassia Moura def Sabrina Gondim via RNC

Mikey Musumeci def Kevin Danzler via Outside heelhook

How People Won

75% of the matches ended in submissions which is an amazing result. The subs were split down the middle between leglocks and chokes as there were surprisingly no armlocks. We also got a draw in the first match, which is rare, but deserved as things were fairly even and the match was uneventful.

Stats

Overall

This was a pretty good event, but I think the late replacements took a bit of wind out of the sails. The results were good and I enjoyed almost all the matches. The refs did a better job of addressing the lack of action and I think it helped keep the matches moving. The match making was better this time around although there was a bit of a lack of star power. I think they did improve their selection of athletes and choose people that came to finish the match which really helped the watchability.

I think they should rebook William Tackett's original match and if he wins give him another shot at the title. Cassia Moura is in a strange place as I don't know who they can give her next. Sarah Galvao would be good, but they just fought not that long ago and IMO they should wait before a rematch. Mikey needs some tougher comp, but that goes without saying. I don't know why they didn't bring in Junny Ocasio. I'm not mad at Ethan Crelinstein getting the next title shot either. That division seems the most interesting, so I hope they start focusing more on it and build the rooster from there.

The next UFC BJJ card is coming soon and I hope they keep this same momentum and it is filled with action packed matches and finishes. Be sure to come back and check the stats and results for that as well.
