What We Learned From the 2026 Asia Oceania Trials

The Asia & Oceania trials just finished and we have 8 new people headed into ADCC. This was the last set of trials and this was the last chance for many competitors. The only other chance many have is getting chosen for invites. There were a couple of names I was surprised didn't enter, but this year's ADCC seems to be a bit less popular with competitors than before.

How People Won

I should note as always that I didn't cover all of the matches. In this case I only covered the finals matches. Perhaps due to this we got some disappointing results. Only one match ended in submission and 25% of the matches were decided by judges decision. The rest of the matches were won on points.

The rest of the event was better than the finals matches, so check some of them out. I've tried to show a few of the highlights here, but check out some of the more exciting athletes for some great subs.

Stats

Overall

There were a lot of surprises and some unexpected wins. It is nice to see some new blood get in there and hopefully they put up a good fight at ADCC. I was disapointed to see Lucas Kannard lose as I thought he won his finals match. Hopefully he gets an invite.

Speaking of invites, I'm waiting for them to announce what they will do about Izaak Mitchell. I can't imagine he will compete at ADCC, but there hasn't been an official announcement yet. I feel Kenta Iwamoto should get his spot. I feel like he should be there and he didn't compete in these trials.

I feel like Lachlan Giles also deserves a lot of praise for his efforts here. He ran the training camp for 50% of the winners here. He once again proves he's one of the best coaches in BJJ. I was a bit surprised that Levi Jones-Leery wasn't at these trials, but perhaps he is still injured.

I'm looking forward to ADCC and I'll start doing some previews of the decisions soon, so stay tuned.
