What We Learned From Polaris 38

Polaris is back with with a welter weight GP. This did this about a year agao and I really enjoyed it. This one also had some great names, so I think people were excited about it even though there wasn't a huge build up. We got some of the best fighters in this world and then 2 people who won the Polaris qualifiers. Matheus is the current champ, but PJ Barch won the last GP. We also had Deandre Corbe, who is always dangerous and Tommy Langaker, who has defeated Matheus before. This was a great tournament and on top of that we got a great match from Sarah Galvao. Let's take a look at the results below.

 Results

Matheus Szczecinski def Deandre Corbe via Ankle lock

PJ Barch def Taylor Pearman via dec

Micahel Liera Jr. def Carson Coles via dec

Tommy Langaker def Sebastian Patyk via dec

Matheus Szczecinski  def Micael Liera Jr. via Armbar

PJ Barch def Tommy Langaker via RNC

Sarah Galvao def Zara Di Tofano via Darce choke

Matheus Szczecinski  def PJ Barch via dec

How People Won

Here we had 50% of the matches end in submission, which is great. Of those, half were chokes followed by 1 leglock and armlock each. This was a great result in my opinon and I was a bit worried at first. Things started off with a bang and then we got 3 decisions in a row, but after that the subs came again. Matheus looked very good and even though people knew what was coming, only PJ Barch was able to stop it. Those 2 matches are definitely worth studying if you like playing guard.

Stats

Overall

This was a great event and I think Polaris did the right thing by featuring this weightclass. All too often I feel like people want to do heavy weights, but that often ends in boring matches. I think all of these matches were pretty good and some of them were great. I'd like them to do another one next year. I'd also like to see them do a light weight GP with Owen Jones, Meyram Alves, Gabriel Sousa, etc. The amount of competitors was just right IMO and I never found myself getting bored. The Sarah Galvao match was also entertaining and fun. Although the bracket itself looked a bit off, the result was good and that is all that matters. I'm also looking forward to Matheus defending his belt against someone soon. Hopefully Polaris can get that done before the end of the year.

Another great card from Polaris and I hope they can keep up this momentum.
