ADCC is back and I'll be doing the Play-by-play again, so stay tuned. I'll do the first day here and the 2nd day on another page. Since there are so many matches going on at the same time, I won't be able to cover them all, but I will try to focus on the matches with the biggest or most exciting names. I'll post the divisions below so you can see who is in the tournament.
Play-By-Play
Things are getting started now.First up is the +99kg division.
The first match is Felipe Pena vs Belal Etiabari. Felipe is looking bigger than I've ever seen him, but Belal isn't much smaller. Belal starts off by sitting to guard. Pena starts off with some north south passing and almost gets the pass, but Belal defends well. Pena is really working that cross grip "mad dog pass", but Belal isn't letting him complete it. Pena is moving in and out and Belal can't get his grips. Belal gets to half butterfly and tries to get his game going. Belal gets to an Aoki lock, but Pena escapes. Now Belal gets to a kneebar, but Pena gets out again.
They restart after Pena loses a contact lens and Belal gets to K-guard, but Pena smashes his way out. The point period starts and Pena turns up. Belal almost gets to the legs with K-guard, but Pena busts out and starts a passing blitz. Pena gets the pass to side control and Belal starts to turn away. Pena takes the back and gets the RNC. Felipe Pena wins by RNC.
Coming in on the middle of Haisam Rida vs Nick Hartman. Haisam is trying to pass and Hartman goes for a bicep slicer. Rida passes, but Hartman turtles before points are scored. Hartman stands and they go to OT. They both look tied, but Hartman looks a bit worse. Rida pushes hard for a takedown, but they go out of bounds. Rida pushes forward again and Hartman tries an uchimata, but falls and Rida tried to capitalize with a double leg, but can't finish, so they restart. They both look exhausted, so anyone could win here. Rida is pushing the action a bit more, but neither has done enough to secure the victory yet. Hartman goes for a single leg, but Rida escapes. Rida goes for a double and gets it. Hartman counters with a guillotine and gets the tap with 15sec left. Nick Hartman defeats Haisam Rida via guillotine.
Next is Daniel Manasiou vs Pedro Lucas. Big Dan is using his size and bullying Lucas. He hits a snapdown and almost gets to the back. Dan is pushing the pace with hard handfighting. Lucas shoots for a single, but Dan slips out and gets to the back. He picks up Lucas and slams him down with a hard mat return. He almost gets to the back, but Lucas gets to 3/4 mount. Big Dan is getting rough and Lucas complains Dan punched him. The action restarts and Dan doesn't let Lucas squirm away. Dan passes to mount and works a smoother choke. He gets it. Dan Manasiou wins via smoother.
Heikki Jussila vs Victor Hugo up next. They are wrestling it out on the feet and Hugo looks slimmer and smaller than I've seen previously. Jussila almost hits a single leg, but Hugo slips out. Hugo tries a kneepick in retaliation, but comes up short. They restart and Hugo pulls guard. Hugo works his halfguard and the actions slows down. Hugo inverts and tries to catch a leg, but can't get it. The point period starts and Hugo inverts again. He has the leg isolated in outside ashi and then switches over to 50/50. Jussila is worried about a sweep and Hugo hits a Mikey lock. Victor Hugo wins via Mikey lock.
Moving to -99kgs we have Nico Maglicic vs Kaynan Duarte. Kaynan hit a huge snap down and then sits to guard. Then he stands back up. After some handfighting Nico shoots and almost gets it, but Kayna slams him to his back with a belly whizzer. Nico working his DLR guard and Kayan is looking to settle into HQ position. Kayan goes for a kneeslice and almost gets it. He backs out and tries it on the other side. He can't get it, so he goes for a guillotine, which causes Nico to panic and he gives up chest to chest position. Kaynan is now looking to free is leg from half guard and Nico looks to shove the leg back in. Nico recovers and tries to elevate Kayan, but he can't budge Kaynan. Kaynan almost passes halfguard and then backsteps into the saddle with double trouble position. Points start and Nico can't get out. Kaynan goes for the Texas cloverleaf and gets it. Kaynan Duarte wins via Texas cloverleaf.
Next up we have a goody with Adam Wardzenski vs Eoghan O'Flanaghan. Adam sits to guard and Eoghan immediately tries to backstep into the saddle. Adam rolls to escape and Eoghan dives on a bodylock. Eoghan is trying to stay tight, but Adam escapes and gets to butterflyguard. Eoghan goes back to the bodylock, but Adam resets to butterfly guard again. Eoghan goes for a kneeslice and then grabs and ankle and goes belly down. Adam defends well and Egohan switches to a reap and finally a calfslicer, but Adam escapes all of it and comes out on top position. Eoghan working halfbutterfly now and Adam tries to smash him. Eoghan goes for a false reap and it looks like he has it, but Adam escapes and resets. Adam start putting the pressure down and Eoghan start working a false reap again. Adam gets out and points start. Eoghan inverts and gets into outside ashi, but Adam puts the pressure down on him. Eoghan gets a hair of space and gets the heelhook. Eoghan O'Flanaghan wins via outside hellhook.
Now we have Luke Griffith vs Matcin Maciulewicz. Marcin is playing guard and Like is passing. Marcin is throwing up subs agressively. Luke starts working his torreando passing and Marcin can't take the pressure. He turns and Luke takes his back. A few seconds later Luke finishes the match. Luke Griffith wins via RNC.
Next up we have Declan Moody vs Achilles Rocha. Declan comes out hard and Rocha uses some sumo style chest slaps. Rocha has put on a lot of weight and looks larger than Moody now, but it isn't all muscle, so I wonder how his cardio will hold up. After some hand fighting Declan snaps Rocha down into a front head lock. Rocha hits a sucker drag and goes to the back. They spin out of control and they stand as Rocha goes back to shoving. Rocha goes for a hard Mir lock, but Declan escapes. Rocha shoots a single leg and Declan almost hits a go behind, but Rocha stands and escapes. Declan goes for a bodylock, but Rocha escapes. Declan gets the bodylock again and hits a huge mat return. Declan almost gets the back and Rocha scrambles and ends up on top. Declan working Reverse DLR and inverts into a kiss of the dragon sweep and then a leg lock. Declan looking to come on top and they stand. They are in an over under clinch and Declan hits a head and arm throw. Rocha scambles and ends up on top and they give him the points instead of Declan. Declan starts agressively working his guard and almost hits a waiter sweep, but Rocha defends and ends up passing with a kneeslice. Rocha gets 3 more points and holds Declan down in side control. Declan reguards and attacks a choi bar, but that lets Rocha get another pass. Rocha is up by 8 and then he steps over into mount and then back to knee on belly. Rocha goes for a kimura, but can't get it, so he tries to go for the back. Rocha moves to the rear triangle and then extends the arm for the sub. Achilles Rocha wins via triangle armbar from the rear triangle.
Next up we have Lucas Kannard vs Matheus Diniz. Lucas sits to guard and immediately attacks the legs. Diniz jumps away and looks a bit shook. They enguage again and Lucas catches him in a reverse triangle. As Diniz stands Lucas moves to the legs and almost catches Diniz again, but Diniz gets out of there. Diniz has had enough and tries to blast his way through the guard, but he ends up in Kannard's closed guard. Diniz gets out and tries to pass, but ends up right back in the closed guard. Diniz gets out and tries a torrenado pass, but it isn't close. He goes at it again and slides past Lucas's guard. Lucas turtles and Diniz takes the back, but with only 1 hook. Lucas tries to scrape him off, but Diniz is holding him and waiting a few seconds until points start. Lucas gets to trutle and points start. Lucas rolls and gets on top on Diniz. Lucas gets a body lock and passes to mount, but Diniz scrambles, but Lucas does it again and gets to mount. Diniz rolls and gets to turtle. Lucas only has 1 hook in, so there hasn't been a score yet. Lucas tries to attack the neck, but Diniz has solid defense. Lucas gets the 2nd hook in and scores. Diniz is spinning and trying to escape, but it has taken a lot of time. Het gets out and Lucas stands. Diniz snatches the head and gets for a guillotine. He falls back and rolls Lucas. It looks tight, but Lucas escapes. Time runs out. Lucas Kannard wins 3-2.
We're coming in on Chris Wojcik vs Santeri Lilius. Wojcik is working his guard and Lilius is trying some outside passing. This is a good back and forth battle where both people are working through positions. Wojcik goes back and forth between legs and Lilius keeps high stepping out. Wojcik goes for and andkle lock and Lilius escapes. Wojcik works his guard again and gets into 50/50. Wojcik knocks him down and then plays between the leglock and the wrestle up. Lilius defends the single and Wojcik sits back down to guard. Wojcik gets to 50/50 again and tries to attack and ankle lock, but Lilius gets out. Points have started and Wojcik sucks Lilius into 50/50 again. Lilius pulls his leg out again. His defense has been really solid, but so far Lilius can't get any offense going. Lilius goes for a double under pass, but Wojcik easily defends. Now get goes to a north-south pass and Wojcik has to turtle to avoid the score. Wojcik goes back to his guard and Lilius tries to turn up the pressure. Wojcik tries to wrestle up, but he gets caught in a front headlock. Wojcik almost gets the single again, but Lilius slips out. Wojcik goes back to the wrestle up and Lilus sprawls hard. Lilius tries to move around to the back and Wojcik inverts into 50/50. Time runs out and they go into OT. They start standing and Wojcik looks to be the more tired man. Wojcik shoots for a single and Lilus sprawls. after a few sec Wojcik sits to guard and then stand to shoot again. Lilius almost passes, but Wojcik scrmables and almost completes a single, but Lilius gets away again. They are standing again and Wojcik shoot from far away. He eventually comes out the back and wrestles Lillius down. Wojcik tries to get the hooks in from turtle, but Lilius reverses him and now Wojcik is working his turtle position. Wojcik stand ups and shoots a slow single again. Wojcik hits and Iranian lift and gets on top. Lilius turtles and Wojcik tries to break him down. Wojcik has a hook in and almost hits the RNC. Wojcik gets the 2nd hook in and then hits the RNC with seconds left in the match. Chris Wojcik wins via RNC.
Coming in on the middle of Nathan Haddad vs Gustavo Batista. They both trade shots and neither can get any thing. Batista goes for a single leg, but Haddad gets a kimura and they seperate. Hadadd goes for a single, but lets it go and Batista runs him into the crowd. They resets and Haddad gets an ankle pick. Haddad tries to move to the back and he has the hook, but his back is misaligned, so no score yet. Haddad adjusts a bit and gets the points. Haddad sitting on the back with a bodytriangle as he looks to open Batista up for a sub. Time runs out. Nathan Haddad win 3-0.
Matheus Szczenski vs Julio Matins is up now. Metheus sits, goes to K-guard and almost hits an ankle lock, but Julio runs away. The same sequence happens again. It happens a third time and Julio almost gets caught in an outside heelhook, but slips out. It happens a 4th time and Matheus comes up on top as Julio runs. Matheus fakes a pass and drops back on the legs. Julio escapes and Matheus puts him right back into K-guard. Now Matheus gets him in a Z-lock position. Points start, but Julio is stuck so deep in the Z-lock he can't even move. Matheus is trying to finish, but it is causing his grips to slip, so he readjusts and start aiming for the aoki lock on the other leg, The foot slips and Julio gets out, but stays seated. Matheus pulls him into closed guard and Julio stands to break guard. As he does Matheus tries to hit a matrix, but Julio gets away. A few seconds away and Matheus goes for an outside heelhook and then a kneebar, but Julio endures and time runs out. They go to OT and Julio goes for a single and Matheus turtles, but Julio walks off so Matheus has to stand. They keep doing that until Julio stays on top for a few sec and Matheus rolls to guard. Matheus goes from K-guard to a calf slicer to a matrix backtake and finally and armbar, but Julio escapes, so Matheus returns to guard. Matheus goes for a lumberjack sweep and Julio tries a leglock of his own, but he doesn't seem confident. Matheus goes for an ankle lock and it looks tight, but Matheus lets go after a few seconds. Matheus keeps the grip and keeps working for the ankle lock. Julio stand and Matheus knocks him down with a lumberjack sweeep and then goes belly down on an aoki lock to get the tap with seconds left. Matheus Szczenski wins via aoki lock.
We have Dante Leon vs Nikolay Vetrov. They start standing and handfight for a bit. Dante pulls guard and works DLR. Vetrov tries a quick backstep into saddle, but Dante sniffs it out. Vetrov tries to drop back on a leglock again, but Dante sees it coming and comes on top. Dante pressures in Vetrov almost hits a tornado sweep, but Dante comes right back on top. Vetrov almost gets into the saddle again, but can't quite get the kneeline. Points start and Dante gets more aggressive with kneeslices. Vetrov hits a kanibasmi from the bottom, but Dante starts to escape. As he does Vetrov wrestles up and runs the pipe to put Dante down. Vetrov gets points for the sweep, but Dante sweeps right back and it is tied 2-2. Vetrov tries to crank a leg, but Dante shrugs it off and almost passes, but before he can secure points Vetrov reverse him and gets on top. Dante has closed guard and Vetrov stand and starts passing. Dante tries to wrestle up, but can't get it, so he goes shin to shin. Dante goes for the wrestle up again and gets it. Vetrov turtles and Dante takes the back and finishes the match with seconds left. Dante Leon wins via RNC.
Next we have Felipe Machado vs Gianni Grippo. Grippo pulls guard and Felipe looks to pass. Both are aggressive and they are trading pass and sweep attempts. Grippo mixes things up and gets a sweep, but Felipe doesn't want to be on bottom, so he won't concede the top position. Felipe is caught in a front head lock and Grippo converts it into a guillotine and a mount. Felipe escapes into outside ashi and gets smashed. Felipe gets back to guard and Grippo kneeslices into the guard and is almost past the guard. Grippo might be waiting for the points to start. Felipe wiggles out and avoids getting scored on as points start. Felipe goes butterfly half guard and then into a reap. It looks tight, but Grippo doesn't seem worried. Grippo tries to bolo out, but can't escape. Felipe has the saddle now, but Grippo starts to smash him so he lets the position go. Grippo starts to pass from open guard and get past the guard and Felipe turtles. Grippo gets the back and scores. Grippo tries to RNC over the chin, but Felipe toughs it out and then stand up with Grippo on his back. Grippo still trying to choke, but can't get it. Gianni Grippo wins 3-0.
Next up we have Owen Jones vs Ryoma Anraku. Anraku hits a quick single leg and lift the leg like it is nothing, but then puts it down. Owen Jones pulls guard and looks to wrestle up. Anraku pushes in to knock Owen down, but gets caught in a triangle. Anraku shakes it off and Owen goes back to playing guard. Owen reaching for the legs and Anraku runs around for a NS pass, but Owen defends. Owen sits back and plays supine, but Anraku isn't diving forward. Anraku tries to dove over the guard, but Owen defends. Points start and Anraku gets more agressive with his passing. Anraku is getting close, but doesn't seem willing to settle down. Owen gets into a weird position that is almost like a chest wrap, but he can't do anything with it. Anraku escapes and comes back to passing. Owen tries to wrestle up, but he can't really get close. Time runs out and we go to OT. Owen is standing with Anraku and trying to handfight to wear him out. Anraku goes for a single, but misses. The ref tells them both to get to work as they are just handfighting. Anraku shoots for a deep double leg and comes out the back, but Owen goes for a chest wrap. Owen gets to reverse closed guard and then a heelhook, but Anraku escapes. Anraku shoot and misses and then Owen goes for a reshot and Anraku traps him in a front headlock, Owen escapes and time runs out. Ryoma Anraku wins by decision.
Now we have Dominic Mejia vs Yigit Hanay. They hand fight on the feet for a bit and then Mejia sits to guard. Yigit goes into a pass and Mejia goes for a leglock. He can't get it so he comes to top, but as he does Yigit tries to hit him with a bolo. Mejia escapes and is back to working his guard. Yigit getting more aggressive with his torreando passes and we get closer to the point period. Points start and Yigit almost hits a tripod pass, but Mejia defends. Yigit gets a north south pass and Mejia turtles to avoid the score and then inverts and grabs a leg. He goes for an outside heelhook and then a calfslicer, but can't finish. Yitit tries to pass and Mejia wrestles up and gets the sweep. Mejia goes to pass and gets caught in a triangle. He shrugs it off and passes to side control. He now moves to mount. Mejia works a smoother choke, but that allows Yigit to get his guard back. However Mejia just uses that to float pass back to mount and score more points. He is up 7-0 now as Yigit turtles, scrambles and stands. Time is running out and Yigit shoots, so Mejia gets a chest wrap and does a front flip. Time runs out. Domini Mejia wins 7-0.
Quarter Finals
Livia Barasin vs Sarah Galvao up next. Sarah goes for a bodylock and Livia goes for an uchimata, but can't keep Sarah down and they end up in a scramble. Sarah hits an armdrag to single leg to put Livia down. Livia working her closed guard now, but Sarah stands and starts working kneeslices and leg drags,. Livia sucks her leg in, but Sarah uses that to pass the guard. Livia quickly recovers, but Sarah continues the passing pressure. Livia grabs a leg, but it seems to help Sarah. Sarah gets a hook in,the points period starts and Sarah gets the other hook in. Liviar rolls and ends up mounted, Sarah hasn't gotten any points, but gets the triangle, but Livia is saying she didn't tap. The refs don't care though. Sarah Galvao wins via triangle choke.
We're coming in at the middle of Jasmine Rocha vs Kanae Ikeda. Rocha is on the back with a 3-0 lead. Rocha goes belly down with the body triangle and gets the RNC. Jasmine Rocha wins via RNC.
Mayssa Bastos vs Valerie Hamilton has started. Bastos playing guard and Val sits down into double guard position. Bastos comes on top and Val kicks her in the chest and comes back on top. Bastos is working K-guard and now moves into butterfly ashi, but Val gets her foot out. Bastos goes from K-guard to 50/50 and almost gets an inside heelhook, but Val frees her foot. Val works a double under pass, but Bastos isn't even letting her get started. Bastos wrestles up and Val defends, Bastos tries to enter saddle and wrestles up again, Val takes her down and Bastos goes for a triangle and they go out of bounds. Val gets out and they reset back to the center. Bastos goes K-guard to DLR and then sneaks around to the back. Val defends the other hook, but doesn't defend her neck and Mayssa gets the win. Mayssa Bastos win via RNC.
Coming back to the men we have Felipe Pena vs Nick Hartman. Hartman sits down and Pena pressures his half guard. Hartman inverts and enters the legs. Hartman goes for a toehold and it is tight. It almost looked like a tap, but nobody stops the action. The crowd is pissed. Pena is back on top in halfguard, but now they are stopping to review the tape. The judges rule no tap and they continue. Pena is working halfguard passing and Hartman tries to get to the legs again. Pena disengages and then comes back with a longstep pass and gets to side control. There are no points yet though and Hartman recovers guard right before points start. Pena moves back and forth and passes guard again with a legdrag. Hartman turtles and Pena takes his back. Hartman escapes and stands. Pena hits a slide by to a bodylock and takes Hartman down. Pena takes the back again to increase his lead. He doesn't need to points though and finishes the match. Felipe Pena wins via RNC.
We're coming into the middle of Josh Saunders vs Roosevelt Sousa. They are tied up with 4 min left. Josh hits a slide by and takes Sousa down. Josh tries to get the RNC, but the angle isn't righ and Josh hasn't scored. Sousa uses a kimura to stand up and they are standing again. They are clinched up and still no score for either man, but both look exhausted. Sousa pushes Josh around the mat, but doesn't try a takedown and Josh just changes levels and hits a double leg. Sousa avoids the score and tries to sweep to top, but can't get it. Josh Saunders wins by decision.
Next up is Ruslan Abdulaev vs Victor Hugo. They tie up and Victor throws out some foot sweeps, but then pulls guard. Hugo goes to a omoplata, but Ruslan pulls out. Hugo uses a push choke that seems to bother Ruslan. Ruslan stands and Hugo works his open guard. Hugo goes to underhook DLR and puts a lot of pressure on Ruslan's leg. Hugo uses that to get the back with a body triangle. He does this 30 sec before points though. Ruslan brings his arm up to defend the RNC and Hugo hits him with a thunderlock. Victor Hugo wins via thunderlock.
Coming into the middle of Eoghan O'Flanaghan vs Daniel Schuardt and Eoghan is already on the back, but there are no points yet. Daniel stands and tries to shake himself free and does. Eoghan tries to stand, but Daniel runs him down. As he does Eoghan scrambles and ends up on top as points start. Eoghan drops back for a leglock and pulls Daniel into a Z-lock.Daniel gets a leg free and Eoghan goes for an outside heelhook and it looks tight, but Daniel slips free. Daniel comes in and tried to pressure through the guard, but Eoghan get to 50/50 and goes for a Wojlock. Daniel counters with a straight footlock and wins the battle. Daniel Schuart wins via ankle lock.
Felipe Costa vs Pawel Jaworski is here. Starting in the middle of the match, Pawel already has a leg. Pawel goes for an ankle lock and Costa has to spin to escape. Pawel switches to the other leg, but can't get it. Pawel enters the saddle and Costa tries to stand, but gets broken. Pawel Jaworski wins via inside heelhook.
Lucas Kannard vs Gabriel Brod is up next. Lucas sits to guard and goes for the legs, but can't get it. Brod drops back on the lg of his own, but he can't get it. Brod continues to try to play legs and almost gets bolo'd. Lucas is inverting like crazy and getting close on his attacks. Brod falls back and conceds the top position to Lucus. Brod enters a bear trap, but it isn't tight, so he goes to an ankle lock, but Lucas almost turns it into a calf slicer. Brod escapes and Lucas is back on bottom. Things slow a little as they stalemate each other. Lucas goes for another attack, but can't get anything. Lucas goes into a false reap, but can't get anything. Brod goes for a kneeslice, but can't get it. Lucas almost wrestles up, but decided to give up on it halfway through to stay on bottom. Brod is looking to pass from halfguard and it looks good. He gets to the back, and is up 3-0. Lucas looks tired and is stuck in a body triangle with 1 min left. He doesn't have to wait that long as Brod chokes him Gabriel Brod wins with a RNC.
We're looking and Marlon Tajik vs Nathan Haddad now. Marlon just used an X-guard sweep to get to top side control on Haddad, but there are no points yet. Marlon moves to mount now and Haddad get halfguard back. Haddad gets out of danger and escapes to top and Marlon sits to guard before points start. Marlon goes to a false reap and enters the saddle. He gets to double trouble and ankle locks the far leg. Marlon Tajik wins with an ankle lock.
Matheusz Szczecinski vs Elijah Dorsey is up now. Elijah is in Matheusz's closed guard. Elijah tries a weird calf slicer, but Matheusz doesn't seem to be effected. Now they seem to be stuck in the position and don't know how to get out. Elijah gets a penalty and stands up to release the foot. Matheus is back to open guard, but there is only about 1 min left. Elijah is trying a mad dog pass, but there is less than a min left and he is down by 1. Time runs out. Matheus Szczecinski wins 1-0.
Diego "Pato" Oliveria vs Gianni Grippo is up now. They hand fight for a bit and then Grippo pulls guard. Grippo working DLR and Pato is trying to work a kneeslice. Grippo goes to K-guard and then SLX and then X-guard to elevate Pato, but he can't sweep him. Grippo is trying to work that SLX more, but Pato starts to smash him. Now Pato floats over the top into mount. There aren't any points yet, but Grippo looks like he's stuck. Grippo tries to escape and Pato moves to side control. Pato goes back to halfguard , but he keeps the bodylock, so he can pass again to get points. Pato passes again and Grippo rolls to get away, but Pato is on him like glue. Grippo turtles, but Pato has 1 hook in on the back. Pato goes for the RNC and Grippo rolls, but can't escape. Pato gets the other hook in and almost gets the neck as well. Pato is up by 3 now. Grippo rolls hard and Pato traps his arm in position to an arm triangle. Grippo is going crazy trying to spin out, but it can't get out until there are 15 seconds left. Time runs out and Deigo Pato wins 3-0.
Gavin Corbe vs Ryoma Anraku starts and Corbe sits to guard. Corbe wrestles up, but gets stuck in a front headlock. He sits back to guard and tries to pull Anraku in. Corbe inverts and Anraku almost passes to north south, but neither can get anything. Corbe is doing a weird forward roll and seems to be prioritizing staying active. Anraku tries a torreando, but Corbe shoots his legs up for an armbar and Anraku backs out. Points start and Anraku gets a warning. Anraku runs around and jumps on Corbe's neck and puts him in a front headlock. Corbe escapes and Anraku pressures in from halfguard. Corbe wrestles up on a single leg, but he can't put Anruku down. Corbe now sucks Anraku into 50/50 and gets the inside heelhook. Gavin Corbe wins with an inside heelhook.
